A month ago, I attended my first National Planning Conference in Minneapolis.I had the opportunity to present and meet many new and old planner friends from all over the US. I spoke about the topic 'Reimagine Civic Centers in Southern California', based on my experience at AECOM.
Today holds a special significance in my region, Sant Jordi / Saint George, as we come together and we celebrate it by buying books and red roses, while our streets bustle with people and stands of books and roses.

Narrower lanes will help US cities create safer streets.
‘The study recommends that cities and states set 10-foot lanes as the default width in urban areas and let engineers justify wider lanes.’ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

In doing so, they often overlooked the vital aspect of how people would feel while walking along these streets, whether with their dogs, families, or friends. The result: streets that resemble vast and unwelcoming thoroughfares rather than inviting, community-oriented spaces.
Southern California Streets - Intimate V. Sprawl
From "Walkable City" book I'm reminded oof how engineers have played a role in shaping streets in American cities.
This consistently emerges in conversations with my friends here in LA about the significance of Urban Design.
The disparity in the experience of walking on neighborhood streets is striking, whether it's an intimate 90-ft (27ft) wide street with just two lanes or a sprawling 162-ft (49m) wide road with six lanes. Both of these streets serve single-family and multifamily residential units.
Speck's book compellingly argues that some cities overly relied on traffic engineers in the past, taking their highway standards and applying them into urban and suburban streets.
The visuals compares Normandie St in LA and Atlanta Ave in Huntington Beach, showcase the contrast in design intent. One st appears tailored primarily for the convenience of cars often 'designed' by traffic engineers' influence, while the other provides a human-centered approach.
As Angelina and Barcelonina, I'm thrilled Los Angeles will implement an urban strategy called 'Park Block' and it's inspired by Barcelona's 'Superblock' model.
