Rex Jim Lawson was born in 1938 in the Kalabari region of present-day Rivers State, Nigeria. He emerged from the riverine world of the Niger Delta, a place of water spirits, fishermen, trade routes, folklore, and musical traditions deeply connected to storytelling.
By the time he was growing up, West Africa was undergoing enormous transformation. Colonialism was weakening. Nationalism was rising. Cities like Port Harcourt, Lagos, Accra, and Freetown were becoming cultural crossroads where African rhythms blended with jazz, Caribbean sounds, brass bands, and indigenous traditions.
Out of this fusion emerged Highlife music.
And Rex Lawson became one of its greatest prophets.

Fulani Militancy: Nigeria Might Plunge into a Civil War
Part 2
Look at Nigeria. Criminal elements, armed, mobile, shadowy, move through the forests and farmlands. They call themselves many things, but the nation knows them by the name of an ethnic group: Fulani. They kill. They kidnap. They burn villages.
And in response, ethnic militias rise. The Tiv raise their guns. The Berom fortify their hills. The Yoruba vigilantes gather. And each side says the same terrible justification: We are only defending ourselves. They struck first.

Rising Fulani Militancy in Nigeria
Part 1
Nigeria is bleeding.
Far away from the noise of politics in Abuja, thousands of families in villages across the Middle Belt and Southern Nigeria go to sleep every night not knowing if they will wake up alive.
A new report released recently by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom paints a frightening picture of what is happening across Nigeria. According to the report, an estimated 30,000 armed Fulani militants are operating across the country in groups ranging from 10 to 1,000 members.
The report describes them as some of the deadliest non-state actors in Nigeria today.
There are voices that entertain.
There are voices that inspire.
And then there are voices that become immortal.
The voice of Rex Lawson belongs to the last category.
Long after his death, his music still floats through bars, village squares, weddings, radio stations, and lonely evenings across West Africa like a spirit refusing to disappear.
To understand Rex Lawson is to understand the emotional heartbeat of postcolonial Nigeria.

Nigeria Is No Longer Leading Africa Under Tinubu
Dr. Kayode Fayemi delivers a sweeping assessment of Nigeria’s declining influence in Africa, warning that the country is gradually losing its historic position as the continent’s political and diplomatic leader. Drawing from his experience in governance, diplomacy, and conflict resolution, Fayemi argues that under President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria is no longer commanding the respect and authority it once enjoyed across Africa.
The former Ekiti State governor and author of If This Giant Must Rise also examines the dangerous intersection between Nigeria’s mineral wealth and rising insecurity. From illegal mining networks to armed groups battling for control of resource-rich territories, he explains why many mining communities are rapidly transforming into violent conflict zones.
