It is super boring to learn a new language that’s why Duolingo was so succesful. But it solves only one part of a bigger problem. I have friends with thousand days of streaks, yet still can’t say more than I go, you do…
The biggest problem of language learning is content!
You don’t (at least I don’t) want to read random sentences which would/could happen in an alternative universe. I want read stuff that makes me interested, that’s at my level and to my taste. This is the bottleneck of language learning.
That’s where we started https://t.co/WZEkeZLElR and that’s why we’ll succeed. Because we know the problem and we’re working on it.
I turned 32 today.
Last year, I contributed to two scientific papers, defended my PhD, and became Dutch.
But most importantly, I started climbing and climbed that damn 6B boulder that felt impossible.
After a 1000 kilometers with FSD, I think I can share my honest views.
I think Elon is right when he says this is the best real-life AI. It’s incredible to have an on-demand driver at the tip of your fingers, especially on long trips.
You can just leave driving for 5-mins, relax and then take over again. It’s indeed the future. It sees 360 and generally drives very safely, sometimes even too much but that also makes you at ease; so I understand.
Still, it has few shortcomings, it usually works like charm in Netherlands, didn’t have any misbehaviour here but in Belgium it had few hesitations, e.g. couldn’t decide to go to the right lane after signaling and wheel started shaking so I had to take over.
Also, it’s quite annoying with sunglasses especially when you’re looking at the right mirror. It goes haywire, “look at the road!”, well I am… but this will be fixed I am sure.
Lastly, the price… €99/month. It’s just too much. In US this could be okay, but in Europe this pricing just feels out of place. I think €49 including connectivity (or less 🙃) would be much more appropriate.
Overall, this is the best real-life AI I have experienced but few caveats which could be fixed.
FSD is actually a step change, seriously.
It feels alien to be drown by AI that sees everything around you all at once. Even though I understand, can probably be someone that could help design the neural net, it still feels insane that it creates a world model that shows you everything from God view.
Look at this intersection, I only see the front but AI sees everything and shows me from above (chills…) like if it is a video game, it’s seriously surreal.
Sometimes I just love the timeline we’re living in.
Fable recommended that it would be a nice idea to add a ribbon to the books users haven’t finished yet, and said maybe they would like to finish it in the future. It also perfected the animation of the book being taken from the shelf.
Okay I will bite it.
Claude's Fable indeed have taste. You can really feel its thoughtful responses. It makes you feel things. Gives you little hints that it actually cares about you, which feels awkward and nice at the same time.
Whenever I get my hands on a new model, the first question I ask usually revolves around: "How can I make X better, ground your responses via the codebase and give thoughtful feedback."
Most models comes up with general suggestions, I started to notice thoughtful responses once in a while from GPT-5.5, but these were rare glimpses. It feels usually more dry and to the point, and most of the time it's just generic advice. However, Fable really gives you thoughtful feedback... and nice touches that makes you smile. It doesn't just care about me, it cares about the users who might end up using the product and seriously empathize with them to make it better for them. This happened at least five times today.
To be more concrete, I asked for 'ideas' to improve DuoBook, just as I usually do and expected it to spew out ten things which I wouldn't like. Instead, it just really went into the whole codebase, said: "You really care about this product and your users, this is really thoughtful... here are five more ideas that makes them feel things", I liked did 3 out of 5. These ideas made me smile.
I am not writing these lightly just to say something about Fable, it really is a good model and you can feel it.
Okay here is a more concrete example, Fable suggested having companions on the shelves of DuoBook. For instance you get this super cute plant with your first book! Super cute 🥲 As you move along you get more companions like the cat you see on the second row, and more.
It also suggested that it would be a good idea to have the number of words you have read so far carved into the wood... which you might have just noticed after reading this sentence :)
@vlah58 Well, that’s how the site has started. Me and my friend were trying to learn Dutch with Donald Duck, yet it was hard to move between the book and the translation. It’s nice to read it, but you get easily bored if you don’t understand few parts of it.
