Only 38% of students feel their classes help them understand what is happening in their lives...Going forward I will commit to using engagement strategies to listen to their voice and help them find purpose in their academic struggles and success.
For our seventh week of Advanced Instructional Methods, students will reply to this tweet with their final reflections on the learning in our class. The students this fall have been nothing short of amazing! #ImpactLearningKS
@LouisaG1677@hpeine yes, I agree it is a great resource...so helpful to be aware of which strategies have a greater impact so we can make the most difference in a year!
After reflecting on Knight’s chapter on Expectations I created slides to share with my students about expectations for math/zearn time. Now my students know how to act, talk and move in a way that promotes learning! #ImpactLearningKS
Our book study on "High Impact Instruction" by Jim Knight continues this week in Advanced Instructional Methods as we read and discuss chapters 10-15. When my students read something that impacts their classroom practices, they will retweet this and share it! #ImpactLearningKS
Engagement is the relationship between teacher/student/content. 2 weeks ago I understood the effect of teacher-student and teacher-content. Now student-content is clear: Assessment-capable visible learners! Ss must rise to the challenge! #ImpactLearningKS#fullcircle
You’ve got to know your areas of struggle to plan what to do next time you face a challenge! Met 1:1 with students this week, setting in motion some habits that will create assessment capable visible learners. #ImpactLearningKS
During our sixth week of Advanced Instructional Methods, we will be learning about how to develop assessment-capable visible learners, which empowers Ss to become their own teachers & more than triples the speed of learning (Effect Size = 1.33). Follow along at #ImpactLearningKS
@ksoeken1 It is so sad! With all the money we spend on education and all the teachers and leaders who are so invested in their students, we have got to do better!
Wow...I hadn't considered why I used specific cooperative learning structures. Now I am challenging myself to write out the learning goals and proficiency the students will learn through using a particular structure. When you know better, do better! #ImpactLearningKS
Our book study on "High Impact Instruction" by
@jimknight99 continues this week in my Advanced Instructional Methods class as we explore chapters 5-9. When my students read something that impacts their classroom practices, they will retweet this and share! #ImpactLearningKS
My favorite quote, “we must privilege evidence of impact...to ensure that every learner gets at least a year’s growth for a year’s input.” Students work really hard and deserve educators who make evidence based decisions in their classrooms so all that work pays off!
In our fifth week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my Ss will be exploring if we are "fooling ourselves" as educators. We will study "Education Cargo Cults Must Die" by Hattie & Hamilton. Follow along at #ImpactLearningKS. Read the white paper here:

My students came up with words that describe how they want to feel in our classroom, because students should know they have a voice in how they learn.#ImpactLearningKS
For our fourth week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my students will be learning about student engagement. Student engagement involves students being authentically engaged, which is more than students being compliant. Follow along at #ImpactLearningKS
@MelissaGillenw4 I was thinking the same thing, it’s stressful! But your feedback still makes an impact! I’m just trying to figure out how to make the most impact!!
Starting to see feedback as a way to understand my impact on student learning, and motivated to create more opportunities to listen to my students this week to find out what they know and don't know yet.
During our third week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my students will be learning about feedback. Feedback has an effect size of .66 and may be "the most underutilized instructional approach teachers have at their disposal" (Fisher, Frey & Hattie 2018). #ImpactLearningKS.
We are doing a book study on "High Impact Instruction" by
@jimknight99 in my Advanced Instructional Methods class. When my students read something that impacts their classroom practices, they will retweet this and share! #ImpactLearningKS
During our second week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my students will be learning about teacher clarity. Teacher clarity has an effect size of .75, nearly double the average! Follow along as we learn together at #ImpactLearningKS.
@CoffeeL86003633@hpeine It definitely gave me perspective on my students' academic performance to see the effect of so many different influences on their learning. Our students are amazing.
My Advanced Instructional Methods students are learning about the Visible Learning research from John Hattie this week. I look forward to seeing how their new learning will impact Kansas students! #ImpactLearningKS
