This week I learned for a student to become an Assessment Capable Visible Learner they must set their own learning goal, clearly understand what the success criteria is, have multiple tools and strategies to use to achieve their goal, and have feedback. #ImpactLearningKS
During our sixth week of Advanced Instructional Methods, we will be learning about how to develop assessment-capable visible learners, which empowers Ss to become their own teachers & more than triples the speed of learning (Effect Size = 1.33). Follow along at #ImpactLearningKS
@ksoeken1 I love that!! What did your thinking prompt look like? It is so important for students today to learn typing skills and I wish it was built into my school district's curriculum more in the elementary grades!
@LindaSlusser That is a very scary fact! It makes you wonder what is being done wrong for students to have had 4 years of schooling but still not be able to read. Is it the poor curriculum and poor decision making of school leaders? Is it the parents? Or very possibly.. both??
Within these chapters I learned about effective questioning with students. I learned when to use right or wrong type of questions and when to use opinion based questions. #ImpactLearningKS
Our book study on "High Impact Instruction" by
@jimknight99 continues this week in my Advanced Instructional Methods class as we explore chapters 5-9. When my students read something that impacts their classroom practices, they will retweet this and share! #ImpactLearningKS
This week I learned about the "fast thinking" and "slow thinking" teacher. It is important to stay a slow thinking teacher and continue to reflect and refine our teaching practices each year of teaching, no matter how many years we have been teaching! #ImpactLearningKS
In our fifth week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my Ss will be exploring if we are "fooling ourselves" as educators. We will study "Education Cargo Cults Must Die" by Hattie & Hamilton. Follow along at #ImpactLearningKS. Read the white paper here:

After learning more about cognitive engagement for students I thought about how I could add more of this to my own classroom. I found these Academic Conversation placements at TPT and my students have loved using them this past week! #ImpactLearningKS
For our fourth week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my students will be learning about student engagement. Student engagement involves students being authentically engaged, which is more than students being compliant. Follow along at #ImpactLearningKS
@ShelbyyMariee_ I really like how they have to write down their answer before moving to a corner, so they don't just pick the corner that their friend did!
@ShelbyyMariee_ This is great! I love how after completing an assignment or project you can easily use this template to provide feedback, including a goal on which to improve!
@ksoeken1 I completely agree with you! When we want to do our best that behavior speaks volume to our students and influences them to be the best they can be!
I learned that when giving feedback I need to be specific with the student about the steps they need to take to improve their future work. #ImpactLearningKS
During our third week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my students will be learning about feedback. Feedback has an effect size of .66 and may be "the most underutilized instructional approach teachers have at their disposal" (Fisher, Frey & Hattie 2018). #ImpactLearningKS.
This week I learned more about how teacher clarity helps the teacher make clear and specific goals for students and how it helps them more easily reach those goals and take ownership of their own learning! #ImpactLearningKS
During our second week of Advanced Instructional Methods, my students will be learning about teacher clarity. Teacher clarity has an effect size of .75, nearly double the average! Follow along as we learn together at #ImpactLearningKS.
@silly_shellie@hpeine I agree that understanding our end learning goal and what criteria makes up that goal is extremely important in student's achieving success!
The importance of creating strong and effective guiding questions has challenged me to make sure that both myself and my students know the precise learning goal for each lesson and unit. #ImpactLearningKS

One thing that impacted my learning from class this week was the 250+ Influences that impact student learning. The research was very interesting and quickly had me re-evaluating my current teaching practices!

My Advanced Instructional Methods students are learning about the Visible Learning research from John Hattie this week. I look forward to seeing how their new learning will impact Kansas students! #ImpactLearningKS
