Today marked the successful conclusion of the Soil Wet Chemistry Training held at the Food Crops Research Centre (FCRC), Kabete under the Soil Mapping for Resilient Agri-food Systems (SoilFER) Project, implemented by Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization, with support from the U.S. Department of State.
Conducted from 13th to 24th April 2026, the training brought together 30 participants from KALRO institutes and partner organizations including KEBS, KEFRI, KESRETI, and KEPHIS. Hosted at FCRC–Kabete, the initiative focused on strengthening technical capacity in soil wet chemistry and promoting the adoption of harmonized soil analysis techniques under the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN). This effort is central to generating high-quality soil data, improving crop response-to-fertilizer recommendations, and producing soil mapping insights that enhance agricultural resilience and food security in Kenya.
The training was coordinated by Dr. Caroline A. Kundu, Dr. Kennedy Were, and Mr. Fredrick M. Wandera of KALRO FCRC - Kabete, with technical guidance from FAO experts Noorunisha Abdool and Dr. Alex Njugi. A key highlight from the closing session was the strong call by experts to shift from research for publication to research for impact—ensuring that scientific outputs directly benefit farmers through improved productivity, better decision-making, and strengthened livelihoods.
As we conclude, the commitment remains clear: to translate science into practical solutions that empower farmers and drive sustainable food systems transformation in Kenya
