What just happened in Louisiana has some important lessons for those who care.

An extremist MAGA Republican named Jeff Landry just won the election to be the next governor, flipping the state solid red.

Wait, what? How did that happen? It's not even November yet, right? Well, Louisiana uses a top two system where if someone gets over 50% in the primary, they automatically win the whole thing.

Voter turnout was 32%. So about 1 in 6 voters just decided for all 6 who will be governor. Low turnout basically just handed an extremist a win.

Part of the problem with our electoral system is the use of primaries and how lower turnout in primaries versus general elections can mean that extreme candidates win. Only the most politically active voters tend to vote in primaries, and what they care about often doesn't reflect what most people care about.

How do we fix this? Well, one way is to make sure there's always still a vote to be had in November. A system where the top 5 vote-getters always advance to the general to be voted on with ranked-choice voting is one way of doing that. Check out https://t.co/abjX7hcCzY.

The systems are the problem. The way we do primaries is one of our biggest systemic problems we have to fix. We can't have a successful democracy where a small percentage of people are doing the electing for everyone else.

We need to restore and expand our democracy. We need to create a system where a large majority of people are the ones deciding who represents everyone. That means automatic voter registration. That means making it easier for people to vote and making people feel their votes matter, because they do.

Once you understand they don't want you to vote, it's easier to recognize that voting is power. You have the right to vote only because those before you claimed that power. Register to vote. Vote. And vote to further expand that power. Don't let democracy erode out of apathy.

And push for policies like Final Five voting that create a better more democratic system.

It's impossible to know if Landry would have still won a Final Five election, but if he had, at least we'd all know that's what an actual majority of the people of Louisiana truly wanted, and not just an outcome of low turnout.
