JUST IN: Grüezi! Zurich
The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has announced the arrival of the inaugural Edelweiss flight WK82 from Zurich, Switzerland, at Hosea Kutako International Airport tonight at 19H40. To passengers on the flight, the NAC says, “Grüezi! A very warm welcome to Namibia!" Only the traditional water-salute welcome will take place at the airport this evening, with the official celebratory event set for Tuesday, 2 June 2026, according to NAC marketing officer Dan Kamati.
NAMIBIAN GROWN BANANAS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE SHELVES | The second most widely consumed fruit in Namibia is now being locally produced and is available for purchase at Checkers Maerua Mall.
In collaboration with AvaGro Etunda Green Scheme and a local wholesaler, a total of 2.5 tonnes of bananas were recently harvested from the Etunda trial site on 08 May 2026, following their planting in January 2025.
This is a step towards strengthening local fruit production and reducing reliance on imports.

Most people are blaming NAMRA and calling them greedy but NAMRA is not the problem, they only collect. The real issue is the policy framework set by the Ministry of Finance, Parliament, and SACU. Because how do we justify high import taxes on clothing when Namibia does not have a domestic clothing manufacturing industry to protect?
We are discouraging small traders from importing stock, yet we offer no local alternative.
High duties + VAT only make goods unaffordable, limit entrepreneurship, and punish young people trying to make a living through reselling.
SACU’s tariff system mainly protects South Africa’s textile industry, but Namibia ends up carrying the cost without having the same industries or benefits. Our policies need to reflect Namibia’s economic reality, not South Africa’s.
Import taxes should support growth, not suffocate it.
It’s time for a serious policy review.

NATIONAL COSTUME | Miss Universe Namibia 2025, Johanna Swartbooi, showcased a national costume symbolising Namibia’s rich cultural diversity and natural beauty at the Miss Universe National Costume Show.
The costume reflects unity among the nation’s tribes and celebrates resilience, identity, and pride.
Key elements include a crown and cape inspired by the quiver tree, representing endurance; a beaded necklace made of ostrich shells and traditional beads in vibrant colours, symbolising cultural harmony; and a corset featuring Khoisan beadwork, honouring femininity and heritage.
The skirt draws inspiration from Zambezi and Nama traditional attire, with colours evoking Namibia’s landscapes. Accessories like the Ondjeva and anklets reflect purity, industriousness, and well-being, embodying the spirit of Namibian women.
