The #MTBPS2026 projects education spending to remain stagnant in real terms over the next three years. Spending on basic education continues to fall as a share of the budget, and unspent funds for school infrastructure have been removed from this year's budget. #FundOurFuture

The MTBPS offers scarce relief for learners, cuts R306m from student housing and R735m from school infrastructure, and is silent on the R15bn NSFAS shortfall.

Per-learner funding will decline, while 43.8% of young people are unemployed and 10m are NEET. We reject a budget that neglects the future of our country.

Today we gathered at UCT to honour the life and legacy of our late leader Yoliswa Dwane under the theme: "Accountability Beyond Courts: Strategies From The Ground."

We were honoured to be joined by @Nomzamo_Zondo , Executive Director of SERI, who reminded us that accountability cannot live only in courtrooms it must be built, fought for and sustained on the ground, in communities, in schools, and in movements.

[WATCH] Our General Secretary Mothlabane in Cape Town today: "We reject a budget that has continued to deprive the education of our learners."

As Minister Enoch Godongwana delivers the MTBPS in Parliament, we are in the streets demanding a People's Budget.

In 2026, learners are still learning in overcrowded classes, still using pit toilets, and still walking long dangerous roads to school. The education budget is still not enough.

We are demanding:
-An increase in funding per learner

[Youth Group] 💛🖤 This Saturday, Equalisers in Limpopo unpacked South Africa’s national budget and explored how funding decisions impact learners’ everyday school conditions.

Ahead of the 2026 MTBPS, members connected budget choices to overcrowded classrooms, poor infrastructure, unsafe toilets, and a lack of clean water.

Linking this to Equal Education’s Water and Sanitation Campaign, Equalisers developed funding demands to hold government accountable and fight for safe, dignified schools for all.

Three years after a court order, the final School Capacity Norms remain unpublished. Meanwhile, learners continue to face overcrowded classrooms and inadequate learning spaces.

Equal Education and the @EElawcentre demand the immediate release of the norms, clear accountability, and urgent action to address school overcrowding.

The court order was not a suggestion. Learners cannot keep waiting for the quality education they deserve.
