What we see here is a high-brow version of the same confusions we’ve seen for several years.

Every church is “beholden” to and “dependent” on the state in some sense. Every church relies on “political conditions” for its activity.

Churches are able to gather because the state has created the outward conditions to do so. That isn’t a “weakness” of the blood of Christ or the church. It’s the role of the state in relation to the church.

In a sense, the state “drives forward” the kingdom of God, though it does it “per accidens” or as an effect of ensuring civil order. Without the state doing its work, the church would (ordinarily) not be able to do its work or, at least, not as well.

The church’s mandates are two-fold, the CULTURAL Mandate to be fruitful and multiply and to subdue the earth and take dominion, and then, with the advent of Christ, to therefore GO and Disciple the NATIONS. This obviously happens with the sanctification process that leavens a the concentric circles of Individuals, families, churches, localities, counties, and ultimately nations.

Also, beauty is a gateway to truth and it is a means of grace provoking jealousy and pointing to Christ. Unfortunately, most evangelicals have an allergy to all of this and rather are convinced that the high watermark of Christianity is the conversion of the lost, never considering what comes after that conversion.

All of the folks Bayly is alluding to would agree that culture is what comes out of your fingertips when you “assume the center” when you take every thought captive to Christ (“all of Christ, for all of life”)… In other words, having a Christian philosophy of life that answers the questions, what is the nature of reality? (metaphysics), how do we know what we know? (epistemology), and therefore “how shall we then live? (Ethics).

Loser theology, doormat Christianity, and the poverty gospel are all manifestations of the same outlook - namely, Christians prove their faithfulness by their failures. Power, wealth, success, ambition, and so on, are all too dangerous for Christians to handle. It's better, safer, and godlier to get trampled underfoot for Jesus. We may be losers but at least we are good losers! The problem, of course, is that Jesus said his people getting trampled underfoot could be a sign of judgment - a sign that the salt has lost its saltiness.
