In a timeline where Constantinople is conquered by the Greeks and never becomes Istanbul, it would have become a largish Trieste – an important, cosmopolitan port at the edge of the West, but nothing like a megacity.

The immense wave of internal migration from Anatolia, especially the high-fertility Pontic (Karadenizli) regions, made modern Istanbul “the City” again on a world-class scale.

That migration was already underway from the 1950s; the first Bosphorus Bridge in 1973 greatly accelerated and expanded it by opening the Asian side and hinterland. The Pontics and other rural Anatolians brought massive fertility rates through much of the twentieth century, and Istanbul drained that surplus – and much more.

No clear demographic mechanism would have allowed a Greek Constantinople such development. Greece simply lacked a comparable high-fertility rural hinterland under the same state. Had the Greeks also held Smyrna, both cities would likely have remained even smaller, competing for limited human capital. Athens and Thessaloniki would have been smaller too, as the smaller Greek demographic engine would have had to feed four cities.

In such a timeline, one of Ankara, Trabzon or Adana would almost certainly have emerged as a large megalopolis.

This is Pakistan’s Maulana Mufti Tariq Masood, who went to Japan in the name of tourism. There he performed Islamic prayer in the zoo and gave the call to prayer openly in other public places.

In one of his videos he talks about making Japan “Japankhan.” He praises those Pakistani Muslims who marry Japanese girls and have children with them, and says that in whichever country whichever community’s race increases, that community’s culture becomes dominant.

Japanese people need to understand that this man is not coming to Japan for tourism, he is coming to preach Islam.

He is now also going to America as the main speaker at an Islamic program.
