👉🏾Children with SCD are at high risk of serious infections 🦠 such as pneumonia 🫁 (lung infection) and meningitis 🧠 (infection around the brain)

👉🏾By about age 5, the spleen—an important organ that helps fight infections —often stops working properly.

😣JUNE 9: WHAT IS A PAIN CRISIS ?
🩸When sickled cells 🌙 block blood vessels, they can cause severe pain😫.
🩸Pain may occur in the chest, back, joints, arms, legs, or abdomen.
🩸This is called a Pain Crisis or Vaso-Occlusive Crisis (VOC).

👉🏾Ghana's 🇬🇭 Newborn Screening Programme🩸 tests babies 👶🏾 for SCD shortly after birth using a simple heel prick.

🏥 FREE Newborn and Under-5 SCD Screening is ongoing at ERHK.

Did you know? The first signs of SCD often appear between 4–6 months of age.

⚠️ Watch for swollen hands or feet, unusual crying due to pain, pale skin, repeated infections, fever, or yellowing of the eyes.
❤️ Early diagnosis saves lives. Screen child.

✨Before you marry or have children, know your HB genotype.

The most common results:
🟢AA—Does not carry the sickle cell gene.
🟡AS—Carrier. Healthy, but carries the sickle cell gene.
🔴SS—Has Sickle Cell Disease.
🟠SC—Also has Sickle Cell Disease.
