Philosophy, law, Catholicism, politics, architecture, railways, history in general. For I know that my Redeemer lives and at last he will stand upon the earth.
@finseraste What's disconcerting about this is that there are certainly quite a lot of people who adhere to this ideology who actually understand that the movement is premised on the maintenance of taboos by an unstable coalition of competing identitarian interest-groups.
@finseraste Important bc (1) From the outset, Canadian progressivism was overtly continentalist (2) that pivot was not a total about-face; they remained aligned with and hugely benefited from the anti-imperialist narratives of US progressive opposition during Vietnam/Nixon era
@finseraste@EABeauregard The left's obsession with American political categories means that criticism of their opponents resonates most effectively through comparison with the American right, which is generally sufficient in itself.
@carbo_al Yet Bishops and senior clergy tend to see the system as a sacrosanct symbol of state recognition of denominational rights and won't cut ties even though it's a drag on mission and effectively prevents establishment of independent Catholic schools in the province.
@carbo_al Enrollment is largely driven by cultural identity but often non-Catholic parents choose them merely because the public school is just a bit worse. They provide a banal insubstantial religious ed. Students are given reason to easily dismiss Catholicism as childish and unserious.
@yuanyi_z Remember that time when a spicy joke by Michael Marrus at a Massey College dinner culminated in the Superior Court’s replacement of Masters with “Associate Judges”
@EricRSammons The terse statement that the priest in question was in error, without providing any substantive correction, or -seemingly- any opportunity for retraction, really raises a question of justice. In a secular employment context, this would be actionable.
@DrMichaelBonner Branch plant progressivism owes its success to the fortuitous timing of Vietnam war and US’ loss of prestige at home and abroad. Repackaged as Canada’s official nationalism, it benefited from both domestic soul-searching over identity & from alignment with youth counterculture.
@BenWoodfinden@cselley expression of its anxiety about being "not American". This was, after all, our founding principle.
ISTM in any event that the Pearsonian attempt to forge a distinctive values-based Cdn identity is showing itself as an exhausted project, incapable of self-sustenance.
@BenWoodfinden@cselley To what extent is this preoccupation a realization of what Grant argued was inevitable in Lament? I suppose it depends on whether one sees Anglo Canada's pre-60s British identity - particularly in its civic and institutional dimension - as "authentic" or merely another...
@DrMichaelBonner The ability to take up and cast down symbols and mythologies in this fashion, with no conviction or contradiction, is downstream of their nihilistic post-modernism.
@ClarkeMicah@AshleyAFrawley Even accepting the car “represents” freedom - and I think this symbolism illusory - The question then is “freedom for what ends”?
@TristinHopper I once met a very nice man who asked if I liked cats and I said I didn’t like what they did to the songbird population. He looked like I had put a dagger through his heart & I learned afterwards he was rescuing strays and keeping them in a cat hotel in his yard.
@JVanMaren I find that at antique/junk stores the thing I invariably walk away with are old tattered children’s books because these types of innocent stories just aren’t printed anymore and it seems the library’s children sections contain only inane comics or gender propaganda
@MichaelPlaxton I may have difficulty with focus and organization but it’s not impossible in the way that a blind person can’t see. & it’s through recognizing the impact and severity in certain contexts (post diagnosis) that has helped me to adapt and emphasize my strengths in my legal career
@MichaelPlaxton Im pretty skeptical of the law school model in general insofar as it’s used as a hiring metric, but fwiw speaking as someone who had undiagnosed adhd when I attended and also did pretty poorly in consequence I would not have wanted accommodations.
