just flat out wrong.
But somehow it’s still catchy. Still fun. Still everywhere.
That’s the part that gets me.
Music really is powerful like that, it can make you feel something before you ever question it.
What’s a song that hit you like this?
worse, like It Wasn’t Me by Shaggy.
I didn’t really think about it like that until I had kids.
Because now I think, if my son heard me singing that and asked, “what’s this song about?” what would I even say?
How do you explain that?
When you look at it from that lens, it’s
Ever catch yourself belting out a song only to realize later it’s about something… not so great? We’ve all been there. The rhythm grabs you, the melody hooks you and then you realize the lyrics are about cheating or
influence.
That’s why certain songs stick forever.
Why they cross age groups.
Why they don’t need to be “understood” to be felt.
It makes you think:
How much of what we love…
are we actually choosing?
And how much of it just sounds too good to question?
It’s kind of wild when you really think about Can’t Feel My Face by The Weeknd.
On the surface?
Catchy. Clean. Funky. Feels like a love song.
But then someone casually says:
“…you know that’s about c*caine, right?”
And you’re like wait, what?
And the craziest part isn’t even
That’s not even a knock on the song, it’s actually the opposite.
It shows how powerful music really is.
A melody can override context.
A beat can carry anything.
A hook can make any message feel universal.
Same words.
Different delivery… totally different impact.
That’s
Music might be the most underrated force in your life.
Feels like one of those things everyone experiences but no one wants to say out loud.
Someone needs to do a deep dive on this. Podcast recommendations on this?
@PrinceMarv13 Hey Marvin, huge fan of you and the show! I’m a sound engineer working in music/audio, and I primarily use Avid Pro Tools for most of my projects. Every now and then, I notice the camera catching glimpses of your screen during the show, and it looks like you’re using some kind of AVID-based software or a sound sample board.
I’d love to know more about the software you’re working with, or just any insights on what the pros use, if you would like to share any! What kind of education or training would you recommend to someone looking to do what you do? Just a curious music engineer looking to learn from the best! Thanks for your time.
