@vectorgen I think I just assumed (naively) that more education = more money. Stupid, but it is what it is. I still love academia, but I certainly had misconceptions. My trajectory and mentors definitely made the experience worth it, even with the poor pay.
@NotAPomegranite Yeah definitely some kind of one-upmanship. I remember it was brought up one time by one of the faculty leading the course that we were all just crapping on the paper. I’m sure it could be avoided, but it’s hard to fight the imposter syndrome of being afraid to say you liked it.
@NotAPomegranite Sometimes I think any “formal” training with a journal club type class can be more detrimental as everyone always tries to pick apart the paper to the extreme
Cleaning out the apartment and found this article in science magazine from 2016... a failure to invest in science for the long haul leads to a global pandemic. Who could’ve guessed at the fallout? Both in lives lost and in downward economic trends.
@brandon_madsen This is tricky. If you have aids and die of a cold, is a cold listed as cause of death or is aids? hospital billing is not as black and white as we’d like it to be. For what it’s worth, most hospitals are in serious financial trouble from covid due to cancelled surgeries.
Rereading my immunology textbook from 2012. Seems relevant 8 years later. Not exactly the flu, but another respiratory virus raging. We’ve known it was on the way, but there was only so much we could do. Yet we still didn’t do enough. RIP to the 100,000.
I was asked by a journalist how Bayesian stats is relevant to the epidemic. I said some deflationary things. I don't care about 19th century academic debates.
I worry more about narrative that we need to get the models "right". We don't buy insurance bc we know what will happen.
You might have heard about the new test that can detect #COVID19 in 5 min. And, you’ve almost definitely heard about the test that took days to run and that we don’t have enough of. Wondering what makes the difference? Read on.
Just a casual day in the Amazon Rainforest where butterflies swarm turtles to drink their tears.
Why? Because the rainforest here lacks sodium, and butterflies gotta find it somewhere so they hit up the ol’ turtle eyeballs.
Excited to get this research out there investigating infections with Wolbachia and other endosymbionts within species of insects. Hope you all enjoy it! https://t.co/wewXTfYiij
@brithebiologist@kaitlynscmpbll Geeze. That is one mean and determined critter. Are we sure that's a bird still? You must have stumbled upon the Buffalo Lake Behemoth. Definitely interested to see what it is. Maybe try some sort of scarecrow?
@kaitlynscmpbll@brithebiologist I could see the clear bins with air holes helping. The insects could be drawn more to the lighter areas when emerging... maybe?
