Excited to share that @chdkz is joining @naturalpay today from Notion.

Chika sent me an email on a Sunday night saying that he was on a flight to San Francisco. It was well written, but what I appreciated most was how much of his personal ethos was woven through the message.

Reading it, it was pretty clear that I was going to have a short window to make sure he came to work at Natural.

Meeting him emphasized his competence, but what stood out was his humility, his commitment to being excellent, and his willingness to bet on himself, all without ego.

There are very few people who come through the office so capable, with such genuine curiosity, and real sincerity about the process.

There is no question that Chika moves through the world incredibly intentionally, and with an insanely steep slope. If you interact with him, you’re struck by just how capable he is in such a short amount of time.

By the end of his work trial, there was no question about whether we were going to try to hire him.

Today, @emnuelkassie joins @naturalpay as our second designer.

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a product and design obsessed founder. Especially in financial services, I always like to say that we’ll never be able to “buy” the brand reputation and trust a big bank has earned over a century.

What we can do is earn that trust back through a seemingly never-ending number of small product and design details.

We can’t prove on the surface how well our payments infrastructure or ledgering works. So the product surface area has to prove that we care, and that we take our mission and responsibility seriously.

I first hired Emanuel in 2021, when I was coming out of YC and he was a sophomore in college. I reviewed over 1,600 portfolios and interviewed nearly 100 designers before hiring him. I was looking for someone visually excellent who could also think critically about product.

Emanuel was that rare combination, and knows the importance of design well.

In 2021, I had to convince him to leave school and throw himself into the deep end. It meant a lot that he was open to making that leap then. It means even more that he’s making it again now.

It takes a lot of trust to hand someone your vision and let them bring it to life. I have that trust in Emanuel.

Today, @saanvimehra joins @naturalpay.

If you’ve ever interviewed with me, you know my interviews can be unconventional. They’re less about walking through your resume and more about understanding what’s underneath it. At one point, someone left and said, “Wow, you’re really psychoanalyzing me.”

What I care about is the why. What motivates you when no one is watching? What are you trying to accomplish with your life? Are you trying to create more positive impact, or minimize the harm you might cause? What does excellence mean to you, and what are you willing to sacrifice for it?

My conversation with Saanvi was one of the most interesting philosophical explorations I’ve had in an interview. It didn’t hurt that she was exceptionally smart, incredibly hardworking, and had already thought deeply about agentic payments. But what stood out most about the conversation was the ethos.

Saanvi had a seriousness about the work. A sense that building at Natural was not just an interesting technical challenge, but almost a responsibility. Something that had to be done. That identity in an agentic world isn't a nice to have, but a requirement.

Excited to announce that @naturallycli is joining @naturalpay as Chief Compliance and Regulatory Officer.

She was the first regulatory hire at Square, Stripe, and Ramp, where she most recently served as Chief Compliance Officer of Ramp Payments Corporation.

She is one of the most important compliance operators in payments, full stop.

As we build Natural into the defining financial institution for agentic payments, legal and compliance are core strategic functions here—not support functions. They are now our second-largest function behind engineering, and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

We are taking the hard path: building the financial systems of the future from the ground up, with as much ownership of the stack as possible across ledgering, risk, underwriting, money movement, and compliance.

It is the only way to build something durable enough to define the standards for agentic payments over the long run.

When I met CLI, it was immediately obvious she was built the same way we are: high standards, high conviction, and very serious about winning.

Today she becomes employee number 12 at Natural.
