The state's refusal to authorize international carbon credit sales severed their primary revenue source, leaving Koko unable to sustain its heavily subsidized bioethanol fuel and leaving 1.5 million households scrambling for alternatives.
The abrupt collapse and financial ruin of the company have left thousands of local agents and consumers stranded.
Why it collapsed: Koko subsidized the cost of its stoves and ethanol (selling at about half the market price) by relying on the sale of carbon credits to overseas buyers. The business model became bankrupt when the Kenyan government withheld the necessary Letter of Authorization to sell these credits.
Over 3,000 smart-dispenser fuel "ATMs" sit idle, forcing more than six million people, many in informal settlements around Kinoo, Nairobi, and beyond, to immediately revert to hazardous, polluting fuels like charcoal and kerosene.
The parent companies have been placed under administration and PwC has taken over their assets. Additionally, the shutdown has sparked a massive legal and diplomatic standoff between the government and the World Bank, which previously guaranteed the firm's expansion.
