@conorsen I would imagine they are not immune to kids being on screens and not outside playing - so all football is academy based and the richer countries have better academies. Africa/Middle East teams are all filled with European immigrant academy grads. Soccer mania is not enough.
@EVE4ever_ I am at the game - 80 percent of the Dutch fans are Americans and like 20 percent of the Japan fans are Americans. I think Americans are more comfortable rooting for another country compared to the rest of the world.
@cosmorxn I think it’s the phones/academies. Kids no longer just go outside and play football all day - and so all of the progress is in academy systems, of which rich countries do better.
@TransportDems Please reconsider this position. This act has so many horrible downstream effects, especially to the offshore wind industry, and continues to hollow out once thriving cities along the Great Lakes and Mississippi rivers.
@TheStalwart I think this is unfortunately correct, as much as I would like to believe that it can do the opposite and prompt the expansion of humans moral circle to things like keeping highly intelligent pigs in gestation crates.
@mattyglesias Just look to the English premier league. Six richest teams usually win, and it’s the most followed league in the world. Sprinkle in promotion and relegation for more small market teams like El Paso, Buffalo, Baltimore etc. and they just might have something.
@TheStalwart I think 2 theories are strongest: 1) phones lead to less socializing which leads to less coupling which leads to less procreation. 2) phones show women (especially on masculine societies like Korea and Columbia) a better life and don’t settle.
@TheStalwart@tracyalloway@timqueeney Got to do barbed wire next. Wooden fencing was almost 20 percent of gdp prior to the invention - plus it created a whole new ranching industry.
@conorsen I think it is the leisure Covid boom towns that have gone soft. Hawaii, Palm Springs, etc. I think ai will increase wealth and leisure time and these longer term getaways will come back.
@buccocapital I still don’t understand why there is no ai utopian evangelist - of all the potential outcomes “we all work less and have just as much stuff” isn’t crazier than the other tail.
