It’s not a race to be the first one to apply fall NH3.
Soil temps are finally trending down & we actually got some rain but lets not kid ourselves. Oct 20>April 20 is 6 Mo!
Remember that whole 4R stewardship thing everyone likes to brag about? This would be the “Right time” part
Low stalk strength seen in this field near Monmouth (Warren Co), mainly due to very dry conditions during grain filling. Only ~1.2” of rain from Aug 1 through mid Sept. Prioritize harvest in fields like this to reduce lodging risk.

So many stem diseases can look like SDS. Don’t rely on foliar symptoms! Always check the stem exterior AND interior for discoloration. SDS has apparently healthy stems.
From my field visits yesterday, tar spot may not be the major problem in corn, but gray leaf spot, especially if you planted a susceptible hybrid. Also, watch for southern rust as we continue to get samples.
Stating the obvious: it’s been a very humid summer.
The average dewpoint temperature so far this summer has been among the highest in the past 40 years across the state. For example, Jackson County has experienced an *average* of 71 degrees from June 1 to July 22. 🥵 #ilwx

A lot of flattened and root lodged corn from storms today in NW to Central Indiana. Majority of the corn will “gooseneck” and recover fine at current vegetative stages. Still hate to see it, especially on a lot of great looking corn in these areas.
