I've read a lot about having a WHY. Why do we do the things we do?

I'm feeling reflective as my book prepares to release, so I've spent a lot of time thinking about my why today. Why caddying? Turns out, there are lots of why's...

-Because a door slammed shut on me and caddying is the door that opened. That's why.

-Because I have a family that relies on me. You do what you have to do even when it's hard. That's why.

-Because it makes me feel proud when my kids see me wobble in after a double loop. I know it's making an impression that will influence their own work ethics. That's why.

-Because I have battled (and still battle) anxiety and depression, and I've found that long walks on a golf course where I'm not the one playing are the perfect medicine. That's why.

-Because I like celebrating with people after a good shot. That's why.

-Because I feel like I'm good at encouraging people after a bad shot. That's why.

-Because it gives me stuff to tweet about. And I like spending some virtual time with ya'all. That's why.

-Because I love being around the other caddies, some who've unexpectedly become very close friends. That's why,

-Because I get to meet interesting folks from all over the country, and even the world. For five hours I'm an important part of life for very important people. That's why.

-Because there are no emails that need to be answered on the course, and especially not after work hours. That's freedom. That's why.

-Because of pictures like the one below. That's why.

-Because this individual sport is also inherently social. Foursome after foursome share special moments together. That's why.

-Because as I was writing this a player I had this week texted me a pic from a football game and wished me luck. Strangers become friends in a hurry on the course. That's why.

-Because I'm hopeful that caddying will serve as a conduit to additional year-round opportunities for me to use skills in writing, speaking, or sales in golf. That's why.

-Because I've seen five hole in one shots by average players, and have been reminded that anything is possible. That's why.

-Because even after a shank, there is always a next shot. Golf mirrors life. That's why.

That's why.
