@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio Those ones honestly feel like she made a bet that she could release the worst song on the record as the single and still sell a million copies in the first week. She wasn’t wrong either.
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio Her self-titled first album, when she was like 15. Also, I love Taylor but her lead singles are often my least favourite songs on the album, so your rankings should be amusing.
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio …Fearless (it’s probably better than 3-4 other albums I ranked above it but I did not come to Taylor until 1989 and this was just too far back for me to fully embrace, though I must admit Love Story still makes me tear up)
- Debut (everyone agrees on this, I think)
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio Now, I know you love a good ranking, so I’ll give it to you but know that I am ranking these by which ones I personally enjoy most, not which are critically or commercially her best work:
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio …Midnights (no classics on here but expertly crafted laptop pop gems)
- Lover (a lesser work but one that I have played many, many times. Includes the most Taylor songs I hate)
- Speak Now (it’s good, but this is beta Taylor and I like peak of her powers Taylor better)…
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio - Folklore/Evermore (I view them as essentially a double album)
- 1989 (her commercial/creative peak to this point)
- Reputation (The non singles here are really good, especially Dress and Getaway Car)
- Red (All Too Well will likely be her legacy song)
…
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio The “shocked and surprised”thing when she wins definitely needs to end. If she is actually shocked, she needs to learn to pretend not to be. It happens almost every year.
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio Indeed. Let who has never forgotten to mention an important announcement during a Sunday hosting time cast the first stone etc etc.
@SarahColantonio@thatchrischase I agree with @sarahcolantonio that Midnights, while quite good, is not pantheon level Taylor and I would have been more than fine with it losing to SZA etc. Just like Anti-Hero losing SOTY to What Was I Made For was objectively the right call.
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio She seemed to really want Lana up there to give her her flowers. Even when she accepts the trophy from Celine you can see her looking back at something happening behind her that distracts her and then next things she’s giving a speech in front of the world and she glitched.
@thatchrischase@SarahColantonio I think that’s a good way of putting it. I think she’s very intentional and prepared, and there was a lot going on in the moment, and it just didn’t fully register what the “appropriate” thing to do would be.
I’m realizing my math was bad (because I literally just got home from a concert and it’s past midnight) and my proposed formula would actually result in a 7:35 start time. My mistake only serves to prove my overall point that these concerts are too late and I am too old.
I think bands that were big in the late 90’s should do their fans a solid and schedule their opening acts at like 4pm so that the headliners are on stage by 7 and we can all be home and in bed by 10 like reasonable adults.
I propose this formula: if you planned to start your set at 9:30, move that start time earlier by 5 minutes for every year since your last number one album. Last topped the charts in 2000? Welcome to a 7:05 pm show time. Everyone wins.
