Who doesn't love cute calves? Awesome seeing the babies after our hard work during this research project. Thanks again to @STgenetics for their support of this project! @MitacsCanada@WCVMToday
If you have visited our Canadian Domain recently, you may have seen three wood bison calves born the week of June 20th 🦬 What makes these little ones extra special is the innovative reproductive techniques that enabled us to deliberately produce females 🔬🦬
As part of a trial during my postdoc, I artificially inseminated the wood bison at The Toronto Zoo with sperm that was sorted for the x-chromosome sperm (to create ~90% female offspring). @STgenetics@WCVMToday@MitacsCanada
We are excited to announce that four of our wood bison are pregnant as part of a year-long reproductive study for this threatened species! 🦬🔬 Read more: https://t.co/7iSvyJ1vdW #savingspecies

Join us for a Research Symposium webinar with @MitacsCanada on Monday, August 23rd from 9-10am EST. You'll learn about various animal research and technologies from Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco, Dr. Jenna Congdon, and Dr. Eric Zwiefelhofer. For details, visit https://t.co/lmNVP8EvVA
Excellent article written by Jessie Hellquist, last year's summer student in our lab. This is why we do the research we do, to preserve the threatened wood bison. @Miranda_Zw@TheTorontoZoo@MitacsCanada@CanadianBisonAs
Researchers at the @LFCE_usask are welcoming Skeeter and Mo to their bison population. The two male calves mark a significant achievement in developing a diverse germplasm biobank. @InnovationCA https://t.co/LSi1lPPpbs
Who doesn't love breeding cows with good people. Crossing my fingers for good preg rates - they sure felt good. Thanks to @K_Nielsen2@ECornand @carolynfitzs and @DrBart_Beef for all the hard work.
WCVM reproduction scientist Dr. Rodrigo Carrasco won a #USask Governor General’s Gold Medal. Carrasco received the award for his graduate work on nerve growth factor secretion in llamas. @USaskHealthSc https://t.co/5ykcuZM1Ve
I happened upon this prime example of the morphological differences between Wood bison (on left) and Plains bison (on right). #bison#subspecies
A few differences include:
1⃣Hump shape (square vs rounded)
2⃣Forehead hair (long and straight vs fuzzy)
3⃣Chap hair (short vs long)
Eric Zwiefelhofer @ericzwief and I were asked to write a guest blog for Buffalo Tales and Trails on "Assisted Reproduction in Bison". Check it out!

A team of researchers from USask and The Toronto Zoo, in collaboration with the sperm-sorting leader STgenetics, has produced the first female wood bison pregnancy with sex-sorted semen. Learn more at: https://t.co/IsJizE4224 #STgenetics#4M
USask researchers alongside the Zoo's Director of Conservation Science, Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco, have successfully produced the first female pregnancy with sex-sorted sperm!

Really proud of our new publication. We showed that a PRID-Delta tended to increase pregnancy per artificial insemination compared to a CIDR following fixed-time artificial insemination in beef cattle. @LFCE_usask@WCVMToday@IETS_org@SaskCattlemens
