There’s this never-ending debate about whether em dashes, semicolons, and colons have become signs of AI writing. As a result, many of us writers have stopped using them—swapping them for commas or reshaping sharp, effective sentences into something blander—to avoid suspicion.
But AI was trained on the best of us. On millions of published works by real authors. It learned from our voices, our rhythms, our punctuation. And now we’re acting as if those marks somehow belong to machines.
They don’t.
Those tools were ours long before AI existed. Our teachers taught us how and when to use them, years before anyone imagined generative AI. So let’s take them back. Let’s use the full range of language with confidence. The em dash, the semicolon, the colon—they’re not signals of artificiality. They’re signs of craft.

You give a number. Silence. The interview ends.
Two days later, the offer is $15k less than you’re worth. You just fell into the "Anchor Trap."
Stop costing yourself thousands. Say this instead:

Jadi gua pernah terlibat dalam proyek pelepasan status kawasan hutan menjadi sawit tahun 2021 di kalimantan tengah dengan luas konsesi 5.000 Ha itu gede banget menurut gua. Dan izin itu bisa sampai 30taun++
Begini prosesnya:
Saat itu gua masih SMK dan magang di sebuah perusahaan konsultan dan singkatnya gua diterbangkan ke kalteng karena ada proyek penataan batas wilayah hutan (tata batas).
Tata batas itu apa? Disudut pandang administrasi kawasan hutan itu dibagi menjadi beberapa tingkatan:
1. hutan lindung (warna di peta hijau)
2. Hutan produksi (warna kuning di peta)
3. Hutan produksi terbatas (warna hijau muda)
4. Hutan produksi yang dapat di konversi (warna ungu)
5. Areal penggunaan lain (warna putih)
Nah tata batas itu kita menata ulang batas kawasan hutan untuk kemudian di ubah statusnya menjadi kawasan non-hutan. Karena banyak banget di lapangan kebun sawit yang udah beroprasi puluhan tahun tapi status kawasannya di peta masih hutan. Ngeri banget kan? Dan ini pasti lebih dari 1000ha luasannya.
Gua ngapain disana? Kerjaan gua saat itu survey buat ngambil titik koordinat dan masang pal batas baru di kawasan sawit itu dan gak sedikit yang emang bersinggungan langsung sama hutan lindung (contoh di vidio kedua).
Gua banyak banget nemuin ketimpangan dan ironi karena banyak banget hutan disana yang dengan gampang di babat entah itu buat jalan atau untuk perluasan kebun. Dan gak sedikit gua cekcok sama warga adat disana perihal kerjaan ini bahkan yang sampe mengancam nyawa gua (ini real), dan disitu posisinya gua serba salah aja sebagai karyawan wkwkwk
Juga dari yang gua denger dari senior di lapangan gak sedikit perusahaan yang kalo izinnya udah mau abis mereka nyari surveyor geologi buat dapet sumberdaya didalamnya dan dijadiin tambang.

Legal said no.

The CEO said "too negative."
Draft 11 said "organizational restructuring to position the company for sustainable growth."
Everyone approved.
Same 2,400 people.
Different words.
Words matter.
To the stock price.
I wrote "difficult decision."
Difficult means we thought about it.
We thought about it for six months.
Then we did it anyway.
But we thought first.
That's empathy.
I wrote "we don't take this lightly."
We take it very lightly.
It's a spreadsheet.
Names. Salaries. Roles.
Delete.
Done.
But "lightly" sounds bad.
So we don't take it lightly.
I wrote "impacted employees."
Not "fired employees."
Not "people who can't pay rent."
"Impacted."
Like weather.
Natural.
Unavoidable.
Nobody's fault.
The CEO recorded a video.
He looked sad.
We did seven takes.
Take 1: Not sad enough.
Take 4: Too sad.
Take 7: Perfect sadness.
Authentic.
Rehearsed authentic.
That's the goal.
The email went out at 6 AM.
Pacific time.
Before markets opened.
Before journalists woke up.
Before employees knew.
Some found out on Twitter.
From reporters.
Before their managers called.
That wasn't the plan.
