[Excerpt] Sarina Koga on childcare during Yuji Nishida's SVL season:
“No matter how small the child is, because he’s an athlete, I want him to prioritize sleep. So right now, the baby and I sleep together, while my husband sleeps in another room with the two dogs. Ever since I was pregnant, I kept telling him, ‘Even after the baby is born, our household will still revolve around Yuji Nishida.’
Even if things are hard for me, during the season I want him to sleep properly. There are also times during a long season when his body feels exhausted, so during those periods I tell him he doesn’t need to help with childcare either. I don’t want the child to become a burden for him. I want him to focus on what he needs to do, so to me, this arrangement feels natural.
(Although Nishida prioritizes volleyball during the season, Koga says he is very dependable at home.)
“He’s actually really good with children. Better than I expected,” she said while laughing.
(When he has time off, he actively helps with childcare, including changing diapers and bathing the baby.)
“He talks to the baby a lot too. The baby already reacts when hearing his voice.”
