Last Monday afternoon, something happened—captured by security cameras at the Pine Hollow animal shelter in Bowling Green, Kentucky—that employees say they still cannot watch without crying. The man in the video is Walter. He is fifty-eight years old. Three months ago, he retired after working as a mail carrier for thirty-two years. For decades, his life had been defined by a precise routine: early mornings, delivery routes, familiar streets, familiar faces. Every day had a shape and a purpose. Then, suddenly, retirement arrived. His wife, Denise, later said that the silence in the house began to affect him almost immediately. Walter wasn't unhappy; he was just... adrift, without his usual points of reference. For weeks, he had been visiting a local dog shelter; one day, on his own, he found a dog that was even lonelier than he was, and they formed a bond the likes of which is rarely seen. So, we find ourselves asking: who saved whom?

To the security guard at the VA Hospital who said my dog "looks aggressive" and tried to stop us at the door...
You see a Pitbull. Let me tell you what the United States Marine Corps sees.
This is Sergeant Major. Sarge. He spent four years in Camp Lejeune as an explosive detection dog. He cleared buildings in Iraq that nobody else would enter. He found 23 hidden weapons caches. He worked 14-hour shifts in 120-degree heat while wearing a vest that weighed more than most Chihuahuas.
When his handler my daughter, Corporal Jessica Tran — lost her leg to a roadside bomb, Sarge wouldn't leave her side. Not in the field hospital. Not on the flight home. Not during eighteen months of physical therapy.
The Marine Corps officially retired him into her care because they knew what I know:
This dog would die for her. Almost did, actually. Twice.
So when Jess has an appointment at the VA and her PTSD flares up in the waiting room, Sarge isn't being "aggressive." He's being a Marine.
He's doing his job.
The same job he did when he was wearing Kevlar and detecting bombs so your kids could sleep safe at night.
Put some respect on his name. 🇺🇸
