dr erin!
it’s been one heck of a journey!
to the doctor who told me i was “too common” to be a medical student… am i “too common” to become a doctor?
tough. i am!
What happens when there is no med reg to bleep?
Yes - there is “senior cover” in an off site consultant or another doctor who has been asked to hold the bleep. But it’s not the same. The doctor holding the bleep is doing their existing job.
Repeatedly, I am seeing how someone becomes a Shruti.
I expected patient death to hit me hard. What hits harder is the systematic failings. My patients are dying preventable deaths because of skill and staff shortages.
I really am trying
I try to raise concerns. I get told that it “wouldn’t happen”.
I have been the only doctor for 8 medical wards. With no senior cover. It’s not safe. I try my very best. I’m a competent FY1. But that is not fair on patients.
I think the most striking thing about starting work as a doctor is the acceptance of poor care.
“It’s always the case”
“This always happens”
“It will never change”
“You need to get used to it”
I cannot and will not.
Poor care cannot be the standard
Throughout medical school, I was frequently told that I would not cope, not succeed in exams, in placement and at work.
I heard the personality disorder comments said to patients. I kept quiet that I, too, had a personality disorder.
I want to make a change.

I am so thankful to my co-author Professor Tiffin. We met at a fitness to practice and later reconnected discussing research. We wrote this paper to challenge stigma and suggest medical school CAN be possible. Support can be put in place. There is a way forwards.
@juliaisobela Right I redid it… it’s not better
My summary is… I like a lot of things?
the consistently high specialties are palliative (which i do want to explore - have a taster day in palliative paeds next month)… however i can confirm…i will never ever be a med reg. NO THANK YOU xoxo
went for a little walk to decompress and reflect on my first shadowing day…
