Tracee Ellis Ross says growing up in Europe completely changed how she saw the world
Tracee Ellis Ross was born in Los Angeles, but by her early teens, she was living between Paris and Switzerland after her mother moved the family to Europe.
She eventually attended boarding school in Switzerland at just 13 years old.
Trevor Noah: Did you like boarding school?
Tracee Ellis Ross: Terrifying. I found it really terrifying.
But despite how difficult it was, those years ended up changing her life.
Tracee spent her summers and Christmases back in Switzerland for the next decade, surrounded by people from all over the world.
Tracee Ellis Ross: I became a child of the world, not an American.
Living abroad also made her question the intense patriotism she had grown up around in America.
Tracee Ellis Ross: When you live elsewhere, you really go, ‘God, we're all the same.’
Trevor agreed, saying American patriotism can sometimes feel more adversarial than in other countries.
Trevor Noah: Most people in the world who come from most countries, you just come from your country.
Tracee Ellis Ross: You just come from your country.
