CEO CivImpact Labs. Launching news, communication & social applications that better inform, reduce polarization + positively impact our society and democracy.
@pahlkadot Iโm also so sorry you had this experience, @pahlkadot, and am glad youโre ok! I think we also need a civic process that can draw priorities among our myriad needs, realizing that we cannot offer all of the services that we may wish to have and still deliver them successfully.
@hknightsf@nytimes Ahhhh! After following your work at the Chron and getting to enjoy your remarks on our @onabayarea panel, it's such a pleasure to now get your stories in my inbox from the Times! Congrats, @hknightsf! โค๏ธ
Many newsrooms segment audiences by loyalty, topics, geography and demographics. @azirulnick shares how LAist switched to segmenting by what motivates people to engage in public life (read: not just civic life) and the benefits the newsroom has seen since switching. #mediaparty
@TonyaMosley Wooohooooo! ๐๐คธ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ Congratulations, Tonya! Iโm so happy for you, and looking forward to hearing your voice and spirit there too!
@KQED Ahhh, thank you, @KQED! It was such a delight especially to see and hear both @mkimreporter and @ailsachang talk about their personal journeys at #KQEDFest yesterday! ๐๐๐คธ๐ปโโ๏ธ
El Tรญmpano is hiring a Special Projects Manager. Yes, I might say this about every position here, but damn, this is a dream job, and I'm so excited to find the person ready to step into it and make it their own.
Please help us spread the word.
@HBCompass I hope you've let all that busy brain worrying go, @HBCompass. It's a new day, and anyone who knows you knows that the few dumb things you might say are insignificant compared with the many many smart things you've said.
@jonathanstray@civimpact No, but I'd be glad to talk with you about it (just DM me). We were actually discouraged from doing this work by some journo funders, so we conducted it solely for the development of our own media impact analytics applications.
@jonathanstray@civimpact We were hoping that our polarization impact metrics and tools could be used by journalism orgs to reduce any inadvertent polarizing effects of their coverage. But even after the hyperbolic 2016 election cycle, we found relatively few orgs open to trying to address this.
@jonathanstray Strongly agree. @civimpact we finally paused development of our information impact and polarization metrics and tools for journalists because we found a lot of resistance -- and outright hostility -- to acknowledging that this could be happening.
@jonathanstray@civimpact 2/ And our prior research demonstrated that most MSM coverage significantly increased affective polarization for both left and right leaning audiences. Essentially we saw a big U-shaped curve where only moderates were substantially unaffected.
@jonathanstray 1/ hey @jonathanstray, At @civimpact over the years we have focused specifically on measuring affective polarization -- and how media consumption changes your tolerance of and attitudes toward people who disagree with you...
