Neither Bo Xilai, the former absolute king of Chongqing, nor Gu kailai have ever been victims of the CCP; quite the opposite, they have always been protected by it. Still today. Both gave themselves the right of life and death on other people and they had to face the consequences only very partially. Bo Guagua, who wouldn’t have been to Oxford or Harvard without the CCP, is no victim either. His efforts to obscure what he knows, at least partially, what his parents did , makes it clear that he should never be anywhere close to power. It is also clear that everything he says is manipulation at this point.

This a very very naive post and it’s a bit scary that it’s still a European view that it can advance this interest through dialogue. If course China loves dialogue and make it as long as possible: it will give nothing (abide by nothing it signs) and will dull European negotiations into believing they are achieving something. This post would have been ok 20 years ago but today!? After that much time of deception!

Le problème de la théorie d’Allison sur la Chine n’est certainement pas qu’elle est simpliste mais qu’elle est a la fois complètement fausse et un outil de propagande parfait pour le CCP. C’est évidement la raison pour laquelle elle vient d’être citée (c’est d’ailleurs extraordinaire qu’on puisse penser et dire que le fait d’être citée dans ce contexte puisse etre vu comme un point positif pour sa validité théorique ; au contraire, cela la rend encore plus ridicule). Elle est reprise a l’ouest pour minimiser le fait que le problème n’est pas la chine mais le CCP; elle est reprise par ceux qui disent que les deux ne sont qu’une seule et même chose et c’est cela l’élément fondamental de toute la propagande CCP.

You absolutely have the right intuition. Unfortunately the chasm you describe is even more fundamental than that. It’s an identity chasm, a chasm between who Europeans tell themselves who they are (pricinpled, rational and generous) and who they are as defined by their actions (for instance, completely indifferent to Isreal being on the receiving end of a nuclear threat). Because the chasm is so deep, because it’s about the definition of how Europeans think of themselves, it will be nearly impossible to change. Both flattery (every US administration until that one) and more recently, insults, can only exacerbate that chasm. Also, because this chasm is about identity, it needs to be maintained: Europeans will not give up their self image. It’s a tragedy in the following sense: it pushes Europe to act in in its own short term interests at the expense of its own long term interests. It makes it impossible for Europe to face reality and tackle it for its own sake. For instance, it makes it impossible for Europe to resist the current onslaught on its industry from China. It’s incredibly sad because Europe has so many cards it could play if it was just a bit more honest about itself.

I think you are missing @MsMelChen ‘s point. For Europeans it’s not the “saying” that’s a problem, it’s the “acting”. It was “acting” (or more precisely embraced a total absence of action) as if there was no problem. This chasm between the acting and the saying has been developed into an art form.

C’est vraiment une très très mauvaise idée de comparer la politique du CCP au xinjiang avec celle de napoleon. Le contrôle de la langue n’est qu’une des multiples composantes de se qui se passe au xinjiang. (Cf la politique “d’optimisation” des populations). Ce n’était probablement pas votre intention mais ce type de comparaison, que j’ai déjà entendu très souvent, est du pain bénit pour la propagande du parti. Il faut être extrêmement prudent avec ce type de comparaisons; elles sont mortifères.
