For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter.
AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.
Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.

At 22, Uber sent me to launch cities across India. Week 1: we were setting pricing in a Tier-2 town. Someone said “mark Travis.” Thought they were joking. Did it anyway. An hour later, he replied with questions + observations about a market he’d never been to. All 100% accurate.
If Anthropic is right and distillation is impossible to prevent, it follows that the strategic value of anyone opening a lead on frontier model capabilities is short-lived, and national security arguments for protectionism fall apart. If china pulls ahead we can distill them!
A horrific account. “I thought having a passport and permit would save me, but no, I was wrong. I wanted to kill myself. I have lost hope" -- a fully documented foreigner whose home in Soweto was torched by an anti-migrant mob. From a report today by Doctors Without Borders.

Another Mega takeover?
Mega Market is making a move on another big acquisition, this time Lobels Bakery.
The Competition and Tariff Commission says it is looking at whether the deal would "substantially lessen the degree of competition in Zimbabwe", and also "how the merging parties will operate should the transaction be approved by the Commission and any other related issues.”
Mega Market, owned by Shiraan Ahmed, is currently part of a joint bid for Dairibord.
Lobels would be an easy fit for Mega Market. Last year, it commissioned a US$25M flour mill in Mutare with capacity to process 300 tonnes of wheat a day. It plans to add a 450-tonne-per-day mill and a noodle line.
Lobels' shareholders include private equity firm Takura.
Years ago I pitched a YG cover to Complex. Months later it leaked online (blame a fellow blogger)…viral moment. YG retweeted, more viral. I was “called into the office” told it wasn’t a good look for the brand lol. Now years later, in time for today’s Verzuz…
