Downloaded my history, finally. And with that, I think I'm sunsetting my account. Will probably check in here & there occasionally because I'm terrible at cleaning up clutter, but I'm moving on #WritingCommunity / #FarmLife. Cheers. -t
Lovely photo courtesy of our niece.
I logged onto Twitter today because I finally got notice that I could download my tweets (do I really want them?). Anyway, one of the first things I see? Pornography. Specifically, a video depicting oral sex. I don't recall that happening before, so ... cracks before the crumble?
@NathanJonesBook @JohannesWalker2 @writerlp@caitief Regardless. If a critical mass of people doesn't use a service, it dies or just becomes ... whatever it becomes. E.g. Google+ was a better design, but Twitter and Facebook were *good enough* so ... that was that. Mind you. Google required a profit. Mastodon doesn't.
@NathanJonesBook @JohannesWalker2 @writerlp@caitief I haven't delved into its actual code, but the design is specifically developed to straddle the needs to of a smaller community as well as a larger, essentially infinitely-sized, ecosystem.
As far as not knowing about Mastodon until recently ... And you were in IT? Boggle.
@NathanJonesBook @writerlp @JohannesWalker2 @caitief It's a better design than a monolithic centralized platform. Mastodon and other similarly federated services should be able to scale out indefinitely.
@NathanJonesBook @writerlp @JohannesWalker2 @caitief Note: Mastodon is run as a non-profit, and all the servers are run by communities of people. I.e., there is no big-tech company running this. Servers and their maintenance are largely crowdfunded by the user base. Moderation is community-run.
I sound like a commercial. ;)
@NathanJonesBook @writerlp @JohannesWalker2 @caitief No one expects the overnight volume that occurred. You only build out the capacity you need. They are doing that. It just takes some time.
(I'm an ex-IT guy, so I empathize with their pain. Heh.)
@SMartinStafford And right-wing social media, don't forget.
As for fascism and western democracies ... WWII ... is easy example for how that is not true. And the MAGA-GOP is 100% fascist. Mind you, "only" 40% of the US voting population embraces this change in US conservative culture.
@NathanJonesBook @writerlp @JohannesWalker2 @caitief There is infrastructure involved. The admins stated that at one point, propagating a post would take 30 minutes. And that is when they clamped down on the number of people. Not that a normal human would notice. But more people = more cost servers, memory, maintenance, ...
@NathanJonesBook @writerlp @JohannesWalker2 @caitief Note. There is a process to move your account between servers (I have never done it myself, mind you). So, if you get an account at one place, at some point when https://t.co/pvMO40mhPL opens up, you could move your account there. That being said, I'll DM you a link that may work
@NathanJonesBook @writerlp @JohannesWalker2 @caitief The downside is that the servers are swamped by the sheer volume of people joining, and most have made it invite-only to stem the tide.
Otherwise, it is, thus far, a toxic-free, ad-free, haven.
Saw this coming. There was no way in hell Twitter could just let just whatever be posted. Mind you, after all the firings and quitting, I will be curious about how Twitter intends to manage this. Plus, you will note that he said nothing about misinformation.
New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.
Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted & demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter.
You won’t find the tweet unless you specifically seek it out, which is no different from rest of Internet.
@Cynthia95001250 I thought the Google+ apoc. talk was a tad over the top until its plug was pulled. Mind you, G made money elsewhere, and thus it was less of a blow to them. Twitter doesn't.
But I think an 80% engineering departure from such a high-profile tech co. is rather attention-getting.
Well, this may be an indication of the level of dysfunction at Twitter, right now. I requested an archive. The screen said it could take up to 24 hours. I am not a heavy Twitter user, and this account hasn't existed all that long. And here we are, two days later, and no archive.
Just requested the archive of my tweets. Though, if I just flipped off the light & walked away, I think I'd be fine with that.
Ironically, Twitter may be the one turning off the lights.
I have experienced leadership screwing the pooch before, but this is rather epic.
