Think the planes in the video look pretty close? That's because it is! and it’s completely safe.
Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum allows 1,000 ft of vertical separation each way, and 2,000 ft in the same direction, from FL290 to FL410. Aircraft need to meet specific requirements, and the crew must be trained to operate in this airspace. With improvements in altimeter accuracy, RVSM rules now allow reduced vertical separation in approved transoceanic airspace.
If you think those two airplanes are already that close, how is a third airplane operating in the same airspace? Because that’s normal. Trans-Atlantic routes are planned within corridors that take advantage of convenient winds, and the flight levels are always separated by 1,000 ft. This has been standard for many years now.
