Out today on the Arxiv: my work with Robert Alicki and Gabriela Barenboim on the "Quantum thermodynamics of de Sitter space". This longer paper is accompanied by another shorter paper on the consequences for cosmology. 1/2 https://t.co/nb1iYdKWk4
“He felt himself at last beginning to be a teacher, which is simply a man to whom his book is true, to whom is given a dignity of art that has little to do with his foolishness or weakness or inadequacy as a man.” -John Williams, _Stoner_ (1965)
@Riazi_Cafe_en It's f(x) = x * sin(1/x). If you also specify that f(0) = 0, you have a continuous function whose plot cannot be drawn without lifting the pencil. It was a great favorite of mine in middle school in the early 1990s, after I got my first graphing calculator.😃
The curator of collections at Trinity, Pola Durajska, will argue the same at a conference on "Scientific portraits and portraits for science" at the Royal Society on 20 March. https://t.co/WRGDp9nhlF
In this preprint I argue that there's a portrait of a young Isaac Newton hiding in plain sight in the collection of Trinity College, Cambridge. #IsaacNewton#Historyofart https://t.co/aLur2V0w4T
"Can we get rid of this ayatollah T-shirt? Khomeini died years ago."
"But, Marge, it works on any ayatollah-- Ayatollah Nakhbadeh, Ayatollah Zahedi. As we speak, Ayatollah Razmara and his cadre of fanatics are consolidating their power."
"I don't care who's consolidating their power."
The simplest valveless pulse-jet engine: A Mason jar with a hole in the lid, with a bit of pure methanol at the bottom as fuel, and immersed in a bath of ice water to keep the heat from causing the jar to break apart. #JetPropulsion#ThermoAcoustic#SelfOscillation
I still think of Carlos as a kid who'd aced my thermodynamics course and who'd stop by my office to talk about how the wind raises waves on the sea and the maintenance of the Chandler wobble. He's now a professor at Stanford. 🧐

During World War II, my grandfather single-handedly brought down ten German airplanes. After that the Luftwaffe got rid of him as a mechanic, due to his incompetence.
Today's 'orthodox' Newtonmas (i.e., Isaac Newton's birthday in the Gregorian calendar). So here are some pictures of Newton's monument in the Trinity College chapel. Note how the sculptor worked to give the marble the visual texture of a wrinkled satin gown. #IsaacNewton
