Good news exists! In five states across the country, we recently saw real progress on gun violence prevention.
In Virginia, lawmakers passed a package of more than 20 gun safety bills. It is one of the most comprehensive efforts in the state in recent years. These reforms strengthen background checks, limit access to dangerous weapons, and expand tools for intervention before violence occurs.
In Oregon, legislators advanced a bill to implement Measure 114, a voter-approved law requiring permits and safety training to purchase firearms. After delays and legal challenges, this step moves the state closer to enforcing protections that voters already supported.
In Washington, a new law was signed to increase oversight of the gun industry and expand the state’s ability to prevent harm. By focusing on how firearms are distributed and regulated, the policy addresses the broader system that shapes access to guns.
In Colorado, lawmakers are advancing a set of gun safety bills focused on safe storage, reducing access to high-risk weapons, and strengthening accountability. These efforts show a layered approach to prevention by addressing multiple risk factors at once.
In Baltimore, new federal funding is being used to distribute thousands of free gun safes to residents. Safe storage is one of the most effective ways to reduce unintentional shootings and gun suicides. This is a community-level investment that will prevent harm before it happens.
These wins, across policy and practice, show that preventing gun violence requires both strong laws and real resources.
