“When you drop your ego, your image of self-importance and simply be you, just you, whoever you are, you’ll find the secret to heaven here on earth.” — Syd Banks
We should ask kids what they want to "do", rather than "be", when they grow up. So that when they change their mind or end up doing something else, they'll know they have not failed at life or being human, and it's okay to do different things.
I just remembered my grade 7 teacher told us, "If you want to go to the toilet, just go, you don't have to ask for permission." Somehow, we never became a lawless class, we'd go one at a time, and come back promptly. She respected us and we acted maturely for 12/13 yo kids.
