Eskom wishes to advise customers that recent electricity supply interruptions affecting areas on the KwaZulu‑Natal North Coast, have been caused primarily by incidents of vandalism and cable theft at Glendale Substation.
This has led to power outages to Maphumulo, Glendale, Mushane, Mthandeni, Mambhedwini, Ekunqobeni, Okhakweni, Mnyameni, Sthundu, Ohlimbithwe, Mabomvini, Snamfini, Thayela, KwaZubane, Gogovuma, Nhlangwini areas. Eskom technical teams are on site working to repair the damages.
While efforts will be made to restore power as quickly as possible, the damage made is extensive and will require lengthy time to repair. At this stage, there is no estimated time of restoration.
Eskom strongly condemns the ongoing theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which continues to disrupt supply to critical services such as hospitals and other medical facilities, critical water supplies and residential areas. These criminal acts not only inconvenience customers but also pose a safety risk to the perpetrators and the community at large.
Eskom Security, together with local law enforcement authorities, are investigating the incidents and encourage members of the public to assist by reporting any suspicious activity to the Eskom Crime Line on 0800 112 722 or to the nearest police authorities.

Eskom is aware of the power outage affecting customers in Ventersdorp, Makokskraal, and the Coligny Rural areas as a result of cable theft and vandalism. Eskom technicians are on site attending to the fault and working to replace the stolen infrastructure. At this stage, an estimated restoration time is not yet determined. Further updates will be communicated as soon as additional information becomes available. As a safety precaution customers are urged to treat all electrical connections as live during this period. Eskom Limpopo wishes to inform customers of a planned power interruption tomorrow, 23 August 2026, starting at 08:00, to allow technical teams to safely replace a faulty current transformer (CT) at Mankweng Substation.
The work will require the temporary switching off of Syferkuil and UNIN substations.
Affected areas include Mankweng Units A, B, C, D, E and F, Mamotintane, Motholo, Ga-Kama, Ga-Malahlela, Masealame, Makeketela, Sickieline, Mentz, Hlahlagane, Makotopong, Nchichane, Mothiba, Moremadi, Mamadimo Park, Ga-Thoka and Nobody.
Eskom apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates customers' patience and understanding while this essential work is carried out.

Operational Progress Update: Eskom's Energy Availability Factor
📈 Energy Availability Factor (EAF) reached 72.56% between 14 and 20 August 2026, up from 65.10% during the same period last year.
✅ Year-to-date (1 April 2026 to 20 Aug 2026) EAF has improved to 67.79%, the highest level achieved since 16 October 2020.
✅ EAF has increased by 12.3% over the past three years.
✅ Approximately 6 100MW of generation capacity has been restored to the grid.
✅ More than 79% of Eskom’s coal fleet is operating at EAF levels between 63% and 95%.
These sustained improvements reflect the impact of focused maintenance, operational discipline and ongoing interventions to build a more reliable and resilient power system for South Africa. ⚡

Due to the extent of the damage and the work required to replace the stolen cable and restore electricity supply, we are unable to provide an estimated time of restoration at this stage. We will provide an update as we progress with work. We appeal to community members to help us protect electricity infrastructure by reporting any unauthorised persons operating on Eskom equipment or suspected illegal activities, including cable theft, vandalism, meter bypassing and illegal connections.
