Small Human Female

I'm just a gal doing some stuff. Likes reading stuff, eating stuff, making stuff, Korean stuff, Doctor Who stuff, Godzilla stuff.

What #cake do the #Blakes7 characters prefer?
Blake refuses to eat anything as trivial as cake while there are oppressed persons in the galaxy. Eats fruit instead, but you know who's been taking the leftovers at night...

I read a book. It was good
Someone from the past. Margot Bennett, 1st published 1958.
I liked this one a lot. The style and turn of phrase, & the main character who manages to do almost everything wrong while trying to find out who murdered her friend

I read a book. It was so so
Pietr the Latvian. Georges Simenon, 1930

The first Inspector Maigret book. I just couldn't get into it. The action was tedious, I couldn't care less about any of the characters; all I took away from it is that Maigret is Tough™. Like, *really* tough

I read a book. It was good
Mrs Caliban. Rachel Ingalls, 1982

A swamp-thing type creature escapes from a research lab, and is taken in by a lonely & depressed housewife.
Touching, and ultimately tragic.

I read a book. It was meh
Noblesse Oblige. Ed. by Nancy Mitford, 1956

Cried when I picked this one up, it reminded me of the good times with the person who gave it to me.
Otherwise, twas a fairly tedious collection of essays on the English upper class, mainly focused on language

So, was *that* about me 🤔

[Small Human Female @esmesstuff]

All I have is sensible advice, like go to the doctor and get help

I read a book. It was very good
Piranesi. Susanna Clarke, 2021

I was nervous about starting this, as I previously DNF Jonathan Strange.
However, I loved the dreamlike quality of this book, which to me has the same creepy vibes as Backrooms, & the Minotaur episode of Doctor Who.

I read a book. It was challenging
The Book of Dave. Will Self, 2006

Imagine a post-apocalyptic England, where the word of a mentally ill, misogynistic, 20th century cabbie who's lost a custody battle is the word of god.
Very clever book

@Greebohobbes Maybe they don't know what to say without making it worse

I hope that eventually friendship will be possible, but you have to allow time for healing, first

[Small Human Female @esmesstuff]

Heartbreak is a terrible thing to inflict on someone, but sometimes you have to recognise that you've spent your whole life going along with what other people want so as not to upset anyone, and now it's time to take care of your own mental health.
This too shall pass.

Cloverfield (2008)
Adrenaline filled shaky-cam, found footage movie following a group of party goers who are caught in Manhattan when bug-eyed aliens attack.
Watching with the boy, who hasn't seen it before.

I read a book. It was...er, powerful
The Power. Naomi Alderman, 2016.

All over the world girls are developing an electrical power. Some use it for justice, some for gain, some for revenge; and, some, just because they can...

[Small Human Female @esmesstuff]

I read a book. It was interesting
Cloven Country. Jeremy Harte, 2022

A look at the devil in English folklore, specifically tales where the local landscape is a key part of the story.
