At first glance, it looks like a nightmare: a girl forced to share her air with a disgusting creature.

But it’s not just about fear in sleep…”

My thoughts 👇🏽

At first encounter, the painting plunges the viewer into a surreal and unsettling world. The girl, dressed in vivid red and encased in a transparent sphere, is visually tethered to a monstrous, red orb, an entity that appears both otherworldly and menacing. The shared air between the girl and the creature blurs the boundary between victim and oppressor, the innocent and the grotesque.

The tether between the girl and the creature evokes feelings beyond mere fear. There is a sense of reluctant intimacy here, an enforced sharing of life, breath, and vulnerability with something that is both foreign and repellent.

Dependency and Contamination: The air symbolizes more than survival; it becomes a metaphor for the influence of external forces, trauma, anxiety, intrusive thoughts that invade the sanctity of self, refusing to be willed away.

Invisible Connections: The translucent bubbles suggest the defenses we construct around our inner selves. But these bubbles are permeable; our personal space is not a fortress, and what dwells in our subconscious bleeds into our waking existence.

Feeling the weight of this painting is to feel the interplay of fragility and resilience, horror and acceptance. The visual narrative prompts the philosophical question: Are we defined by our ability to wall off the undesirable, or by our uneasy truces with it?

Ultimately, the painting suggests that true self-awareness is not about total escape from fear, but an acknowledgment of what we share our “air” with, both willingly and involuntarily. The nightmare, then, is not a place from which we awaken, but a subtle, constant presence woven into the fabric of our being.
