India generates about 62 million tonnes of municipal waste. Out of this, only 43 million tonnes actually gets collected. The balance about 19 million tonnes gets thrown on the streets and in rivers and jungles and in mountains. Can you believe it?

Out of the 43 million only 12 million tonnes actually gets treated before disposal. That's only about 30% waste being treated, that too out of what is collected. Overall only 20% of waste is treated. Compare this with Europe where 50% waste is actually recycled and almost 65% waste is treated.

The balance is thrown in waste yards/ landfills. So all those mountains of waste you see outside our cities which are as high as the aravali foothills are actually municipal waste not treated but at least it was collected.

Imagine the scope for companies operating in this area. As india becomes a more developed nation, this has to be priority No. 1.
