Small countries can make a big difference. 🇪🇪🇮🇸

In 1991, Iceland proved it by becoming the first country to recognise the restoration of Estonia’s independence.

Together with Iceland’s President @HallaTomas, we opened the newly redesigned Iceland Square in front of the Estonian MFA, honouring that courage with a new Icelandic-inspired look.

A reminder that when you know what is right, you don’t have to wait for others to lead. You can help shape history yourself.

On this day 87 years ago, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

Presented as a non‑aggression agreement, its secret protocol carved Europe into spheres of influence and paved the way for the five‑decade occupation of the Baltic states, accompanied by mass repressions, deportations and other forms of terror.

37 years ago, two million people joined hands to form the 700‑kilometre Baltic Chain, exposing the existence of the secret protocol and ultimately restoring our independence. Yet the consequences of occupation still echo.

Today we honour every person and every family who suffered under totalitarian regimes, and reaffirm that #neveragain must remain a promise backed by action.

Nearly nine decades later, Russia is once again attempting to redraw borders and impose spheres of influence according to its imperial ambitions, using brute force and aggression. We cannot allow history to repeat itself.

Our support for Ukraine must stay unwavering, and pressure on Russia must remain firm.

Aggression repeats when it carries no consequences. Those who break international law must face accountability.

37 years ago, the people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined hands to remind the world that over the previous half-century, the fate of their countries had been shaped by a secret deal between two totalitarian regimes.

The secret protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, concluded in 1939 between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and paved the way for the occupation of the Baltic states.

By forming the Baltic Way, the people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania showed that despite decades of occupation, they would not accept this historical injustice and were ready to join forces to restore their freedom and independence.

Ukraine’s courage to protect its future, and to defend its people continues to inspire Europe and the wider democratic world.

35 years ago today, Estonia 🇪🇪 restored its independence.

Under the determined leadership of then-Foreign Minister Lennart Meri, Estonia’s foreign service quickly expanded our presence around the world, helping re-establish Estonia’s place in the international community.

Over three decades of persistent diplomacy, dedicated public service, and strong partnerships around the world, Estonia has shown remarkable courage in turning the promise of independence into a lasting achievement.

Here’s to making a free and democratic Estonia shine around the world for generations to come.

86 years ago today, Acting U.S. Secretary of State Sumner Welles issued the Welles Declaration, affirming a principle that remains just as relevant today: borders cannot be changed by force.

By refusing to recognise the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the United States helped preserve the legal continuity of our independence throughout five decades of occupation.

Today, as Russia once again seeks to redraw borders by force, the principles upheld by the Welles Declaration remain as important as ever.

Russia's recent attacks in #Ukraine affecting @UN_Ukraine and @RedCrossUkraine facilities are utterly unacceptable. They violate #IHL and add to the devastating civilian toll of Russia's war of aggression. Humanitarian organisations must be able to assist those most in need.

Estonia 🇪🇪, together with Denmark 🇩🇰, Finland 🇫🇮, Latvia 🇱🇻, Lithuania 🇱🇹, the Netherlands 🇳🇱, Poland 🇵🇱, Romania 🇷🇴, and Sweden 🇸🇪, has just submitted a request to the @EU_Commission to suspend EU funding for the IOC and other sports organisations that allow the return of Russia and Belarus to international sporting competitions.

At a time when Russia’s brutal assault on Ukraine shows no sign of abating, and Moscow remains unwavering in its aggressive agenda, international sporting organisations should not be cosying up to Russia or Belarus. Rewarding aggression has a price.

On the 250th anniversary of the United States, Tallinn TV Tower was illuminated in the colours of the U.S. flag.

For Estonians, the TV Tower is a symbol of our struggle for freedom. Today, it also honours the values of liberty and democracy that have long united our two nations.

Russia wages war not only with missiles, but with narratives. Masha and the Bear is part of the Kremlin's soft power, embedding pro-Kremlin and militaristic messaging in children's entertainment while normalising Russia's aggression and imperial ambitions.

The world would never tolerate children's content portraying Nazi symbols positively.

Soviet symbols deserve the same moral clarity. For many nations, including Estonia, they represent occupation, mass killings, deportations and crimes against humanity.
