The journey of one improved seed in Nigeria:
🌱 Variety Development (NARIs, IARCs, private companies)
📑 Release & Registration (NACGRAB)
🌾 Breeder → Foundation Seed Production
⚖️ Regulatory oversight (NASC)
🛡️ Legal protection (NPVPO; Plant Breeders’ Rights)

Fail any one of those?
No protection. No ownership. No reward.
This is what agricultural innovation actually looks like behind the scenes.
Nigerian plant breeders are doing this work daily.
They deserve a system that has their back. 🌱🇳🇬
#Agriculture#foodsecurity
A plant breeder can spend 10+ years creating a new variety.
Before it’s protected, it must pass the DUS test:
Distinct: genuinely different from existing varieties
Uniform: consistent across every single plant
Stable: unchanged across multiple generations
#AgriInnovation#PVP
A seed can be stolen.
Not from the ground, but from the mind of the person who spent years creating it.
That’s why PVP exists
And Nigeria is finally building that system.
I spent 5 days in Abuja learning exactly how.
Here’s everything they don’t teach you

@akumar_org@UPOVint@NAIC_NG@NNasag Without that protection, there’s little incentive to invest in better seeds (disease resistance, higher yield, climate resilience).
The real goal is to bring balance and not control
@akumar_org@UPOVint@NAIC_NG@NNasag Plant variety protection aren’t about “owning all seeds” or erasing traditional knowledge. They protect new, improved varieties developed through research, while still allowing space for local and traditional varieties to exist and be used.
This is international women's day week
And today I am thinking about how powerful women are, from their resilient nature to their power of creation
We create ideas
We create businesses We create innovations
We create impact
