De droogte van de eeuw… en toen ging het gewoon weer regenen
De hele zomer kregen we het verhaal voorgeschoteld.
#Droogte. #Hitte. Gele weilanden. Dor gras. Watertekort. Klimaatverandering. Het nieuwe normaal.
Nederland zou zich moeten schrap zetten. Dit soort zomers zouden we steeds vaker krijgen. De natuur zou het zwaar krijgen en we moesten vooral beseffen dat dit geen incidentje meer was.
Tot ongeveer drie weken geleden.
Toen was Nederland inderdaad geel en dor. Het gras bruin, de bermen verdord en op veel plekken zag het landschap eruit alsof we wekenlang geen druppel regen hadden gezien.
En eerlijk is eerlijk: het was droog.
Maar kijk nu eens naar buiten.
Groen.
Niet een beetje groen. Gewoon ouderwets Nederlands groen.
Het gras schiet weer omhoog. De bomen staan er fris bij. De weilanden kleuren weer groen en de natuur lijkt zich binnen een paar weken volledig te hebben herpakt.
Blijkbaar heeft moeder Natuur haar eigen klimaatbeleid.
Geen miljardenfonds.
Geen klimaattafel.
Geen stikstofdebat.
Geen ambtelijke werkgroep.
Gewoon: regen.
En dat is misschien nog wel het mooiste.
Want als het droog is, krijgen we te horen dat dit het nieuwe normaal is.
Als het regent, blijkt ineens dat de natuur zichzelf uitstekend kan herstellen.
Maar daar hoor je natuurlijk een stuk minder over.
Want “Nederland herstelt zich na een droge zomer” is natuurlijk niet half zo angstaanjagend als “droogte van de eeuw bedreigt onze toekomst.”
En zo werkt het tegenwoordig.
Een paar weken droogte?
Klimaatverandering!
Een paar weken regen?
Ook klimaatverandering!
Groen gras?
Klimaatverandering.
Geel gras?
Klimaatverandering.
Je kunt eigenlijk niet verliezen.
De natuur doet gewoon wat ze altijd heeft gedaan: reageren op het weer.
En misschien is dat wel de belangrijkste les.
Niet iedere droge periode is meteen het bewijs dat Nederland definitief aan het verdorren is.
Net zoals een paar natte weken niet betekenen dat we voortaan in een moeras wonen.
Tot drie weken geleden was Nederland geel, dor en droog. Nu is het weer groen.
De #natuur herstelt zichzelf.
Maar daar kunnen we natuurlijk geen subsidiepot, klimaattafel of noodscenario aan ophangen.
Dus vooral niet te hardop zeggen.
