Perks of being a Nigerian living in Nigeria I guess. And now there’s the sudden urge to go and learn all Nigerian languages, or maybe a Duolingo Nigerian language version wouldn’t be so bad. But then the beauty in the mystery would be lost.

I’ve always wondered something.

So as a Nigerian living in Enugu, a predominantly Igbo state with a large Hausa community, why do some Hausa keke and bike riders seem to assume by default that you don’t understand Hausa?

The reality is that people do all over Nigeria. An Igbo trader in Lagos might switch to Igbo. A Yoruba driver in Enugu might switch to Yoruba. People often become more expressive when they think they’re speaking in a language that isn’t being understood by everyone around them.
