1935年に長崎市で生まれた美輪明宏さんは、10歳だった1945年8月9日、自宅で長崎への原子爆弾投下を経験した。突然の閃光と爆風に襲われ、被爆後の街の惨状を目の当たりにした体験は、その後の人生観を大きく変える出来事となった。この経験から「戦争ほど愚かなものはない」という強い平和への思いを抱くようになり、歌や舞台、講演を通じて命の尊さを伝え続けている。

その後、歌手・俳優として活躍する中で、三島由紀夫と深い親交を築いた。三島は美輪さんの才能を高く評価し、舞台『黒蜥蜴』の主演を熱望するなど、公私にわたって交流を重ねた。ある時、三島がノーベル文学賞を逃して落ち込んでいた際、美輪さんは「そんなもの、爆弾を作った罪ほろぼしの賞でしょう。私なら突き返しますよ」と励ましたという。すると三島は「君は強いね。どうしてそんなに強いんだ？」と尋ねた。美輪さんが「半分女だからですよ」と答えると、三島は笑みを浮かべたという。この言葉には、男性的な強さだけではなく、女性的な柔軟さや受容する心を持っているからこそ、困難にも折れずに生きられるという、美輪さん自身の考えが込められていたとされる。後年、美輪さん自身がこのやり取りを振り返っている。

1966年には、自身が作詞・作曲した『ヨイトマケの唄』を発表した。この曲は、土木作業に従事する母親への深い愛情と感謝を描いた作品である。しかし、歌詞に当時放送では扱いにくいとされた言葉が含まれていたことから、テレビで歌われる機会は長く限られた。それでも美輪さんは、「これは懸命に生きる人々への賛歌だ」という信念を曲げることなく歌い続け、2012年にはNHK紅白歌合戦で披露し、多くの視聴者に感動を与えた。

また、美輪さんは幼い頃からさまざまな立場や境遇の人々を見て育った経験から、「人は肩書きや財産ではなく、その人の心を見るべきだ」という人生哲学を持つようになった。愛や思いやり、礼儀、品格を大切にする考え方は、著書や講演を通じて多くの人に伝えられている。

2005年から放送された『国分太一・美輪明宏・江原啓之のオーラの泉』では、ゲストの人生や悩みに寄り添い、ときに厳しく、ときに温かい言葉で助言を送った。その姿勢は多くの視聴者の共感を呼び、美輪明宏さんは歌手や俳優という枠を超え、「人生の道しるべ」として幅広い世代に支持される存在となった。

Ha muerto con 91 Akihiro Miwa, mítico cantante, actor, activista y drag queen japonés. Más que por sus trabajos de voz con Miyazaki en Mononoke o El castillo ambulante, yo le recuerdo más como actriz en dos filmes con Kinji Fukasaku, Black Lizard y Black Rose mansion. RIP
