On this very day in 1314, on the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn, Robert the Bruce did something no careful king should ever do. He rode out ahead of his army on a small horse, in plain sight of the enemy.

An English knight named Henry de Bohun spotted the exposed king and saw the chance of a lifetime. He couched his lance and charged on a heavy warhorse. The Bruce held his ground, and at the last second he turned his pony aside, rose in his stirrups, and brought his battle axe down through helm and bone in a single stroke. When his commanders scolded him for risking everything, his only reply was regret that he had broken his good axe. 🪓
The next day his outnumbered Scots shattered a far larger English army and lit the path to Scotland's independence. Seven centuries later, Bannockburn still stands as the moment a nation refused to kneel.
