Looking back at this scene with Mimzy is upsetting in the sense that Alastor was genuinely happy to see her, and told Husk certainly there was nothing to worry about with her arrival, but of course he ended up having to fix a mess she brought to the hotel and had to turn her away.

Alastor seems so used to manipulating his misery into something entertaining or necessary for survival that when he does experience genuine joy or connection with others he immediately is calculating all the ways it will go wrong, and in this case, he was right.

Alastor’s connection to radio is intertwined in his being, it’s embodied in how he navigates in life on Earth and then in how he manifests his power in Hell. Radio as a medium, to him, has always been more intimate, invasive, and enduring as opposed to television. Radio, like Alastor, enters unseen & unsettled into the dark, using the listener as a conduit for its existence as entertainment.

So, I don’t think Alastor ever worries about radio becoming obsolete or him becoming a “has-been” despite going off the air for 7 years. It is inseparable from how he understands himself, how he is still capable of making the future lose its signal, how he can reach out into the dark without anyone being able to reach back.
