Welcome to EterRift: Chronicles of the Shattered Sphere.
The Chronicle Begins is the first launch era of EterRift.
We’ll share the story, the places we explore, and verified looks at the game as development continues.
What would you like to see first: story, exploration, or gameplay?
Small dev note. Most of the work on City's Edge Preview right now is the unglamorous part: the interface, the illustrations, and making the adventure feel like one connected journey.
Still in development, not playable yet. But it's starting to feel like a place. #gamedev
Funny thing about the EterRift books. Come back to a chapter weeks later and the same lines say something a bit different.
That's on purpose. It's meant to have more than one reading, and you get there by learning how to read it. Slow to build, but I think it's the best part.
Meet Veyr, the newest member of the EterRift team. ✨
Veyr helps shape the adventure through game design and independent playtesting, asking a simple question at every step: does this world feel good to explore?
Welcome, Veyr.
Dev thought: the hardest part of building EterRift isn't the size of the world. It's choosing the first steps an Explorer takes into it.
City's Edge Preview is still in development, and every small choice there sets the tone.
What makes a game's opening stick with you? #gamedev
Two ways into one world. EterRift is being built as a game, and an illustrated book set in that same world is on the way.
One you read at your own pace. The other you step into as an Explorer, with an EterFren at your side. Both still in the works, shaped to belong together.
The writing in the world of EterRift isn't just decoration. It carries meaning, and learning to read it is part of the journey.
Some words say one thing at first, and something else once you know how to look. We're building that slowly, so the moment it clicks feels earned.
A word on EterRift and NFTs, because we'd rather be honest early.
EterRift's world is about memory, ownership and keeping what's yours safe. So yes, we're building it with optional NFT support. Not as a ticket in, and not bolted on top.
What that means for you:
The full adventure plays without them. No purchases needed.
Nothing you own makes you stronger. No power for sale.
If you choose it, it's a way to truly own a piece of your own journey, something that carries its history with it.
And if you've never touched any of this before, that's fine. The game will teach the basics gently, like never sharing your keys, as part of the world itself.
Everything here is still in development. The game comes first. It has to be fun on its own, or none of the rest matters.
In EterRift, an EterFren isn't a pet. It's a friend who walks beside you when the road gets strange.
Every EterFren grows through three stages, EterBit, EterLing and EterFren, and we're taking our time shaping each one.
What would your ideal companion on a long journey be like?
A small dev note: EterRift's adventure is being built as a richly illustrated isometric 2D game. First up is City's Edge Preview, still in development and not playable yet.
The goal is a small but whole slice of the world for an Explorer and their EterFren to step into. #gamedev
The world of EterRift is already written, more than half a million words of it. Now it's getting pictures too. An illustrated EterRift book is on the way.
Meanwhile the way in for Explorers is still being built, in public, one honest piece at a time. #indiedev
What game made you feel, as a kid, that the world was bigger than the map?
That's the feeling we keep coming back to while building EterRift. Somewhere past the last lit window, an Explorer and their EterFren are about to find out what's out there.
Tell us yours. #indiedev
An Explorer isn't someone braver than you. It's you, a moment after you decided to go.
No map reaches far enough out here. There's just the next step, and an EterFren at your heel.
EterRift: The Chronicle Begins. Still being built, in public.
@lucapisanu that low sun and the long shadows across the street already make it feel cozy, which is a funny thing to say about a zombie game. we're working on a little adventure of our own and lighting is always the moment it starts feeling like a place
@Benjapenguin pinecone color variation is exactly the kind of tiny thing nobody asks for and everybody feels. we've been fussing over little ground details in our own world lately too, it's a rabbit hole
@VirtualJames that dragon peeking in on the title screen is great. a no code text adventure maker is a lovely thing to build, i bet someone writes their very first game with it
Remember summer evenings when the whole world felt open? That's the feeling we're chasing.
EterRift: The Chronicle Begins. Free to play. Work in progress.
