Today, City Council passed a motion to open Portage and Main at grade for pedestrian crossings by the summer of 2025. This decision comes after careful consideration of the costs and construction timeline associated with repairing the waterproof membrane at the intersection.
Yet another reason to consider a more practical approach to Portage & Main: it costs the city nearly $1 million per year to operate the underground concourse.

To keep Portage & Main closed -- like it is now -- would cost:
💵 $73 million in repairs to the concourse
💵 $1 million in annual operating losses
🚧 5 years of major traffic delays downtown
For drivers, taxpayers, and residents, the choice is clear. It's just an intersection.
Allowing pedestrian crossings at the intersection will save us millions now and in the future, avoid years of traffic headaches, and support the launch of our new transit route network. For the benefit of commuters, businesses, residents, and taxpayers, it's the right choice.
