#EmissionAvoidance is not eligible under #Article6.

There is so much misunderstanding around what this decision from June 2024 means because this term has not been defined under the #UNFCCC.

The primary confusion comes from the voluntary #carbonmarket habit of interchangeably using emission reductions and emission avoidance. This is a result of:

1) building on the language of the mitigation hierarchy (avoid, minimise, restore offset), which has nothing to do with climate negotiations, and

2) the historical confusion brought about by the #CDM "emission avoidance methodologies" despite being created for reductions and removals. CDR methodologies are still widely used in the #VCM.

Then, there are the various emission avoidance interpretations in the climate negotiations themselves: avoided deforestation, avoiding the development of oil reserves (Ecuador), and avoiding building new coal power plants (Philippines).

As a consequence, I've heard several interpretations as if emission reductions are not eligible under Article 6 - and this is incorrect.

According to the #IPCC, there are two types of activities that help mitigate climate change - emission reductions and removals.

Shall we try to keep things simple? Or is there no way back anymore?
