Criminalisation isn't working. It didn't work for abortion. It didn't work for homosexuality. It didn't work for alcohol. It didn't win the war on drugs. Criminalisation creates criminal marketplaces - this is where violence and coercion occurs.
If you want to know what ivory-tower feminism is have a read of Bindels review that shouts down and rides roughshod over the lived experience of a sex worker (me) after I've endeavoured to encapsulate what I've learned working many years in an industry noone wants to talk about.
Isn't it time to let sex workers with lived experience, who can express and articulate what they need to access safety and justice, to join the conversation? What kind of feminism shuts down, belittles and silences other women who don't sign up to received narratives?
@rina_gill@HackettLaura @unbounders @ST_Culture Pleased to see the book getting noticed already. Really hope the messages of the book actually land, and help feminists who would rather see strip clubs shut down realise that criminalisation isn't working.
@helengt76 Please consider listening to current sex workers’ voices if you want to understand what the working conditions are like in the industry. It’s not a bed of Roses, no industry is - but if you want a policy that actually reduces harm listen to the women you want to “protect”
@helengt76 I’m amazed how few people think about this from a harm reduction angle yet harm-reduction isn’t a difficult concept to understand. If you ban strip clubs (or any form of sex work) you create criminalised market places that are more coercive and violent than strip clubs 🤷♀️
Eesh. There is so much to unpack here. Editorial decisions made by @bbc5live were horrible. Make no mistake here that @NotBuyingItShef are a hate group whose views are not evidence based. Criminalising sex work CREATES HARM. Skip to 38.00 min.

@VictoriaPeckham@thetimes I'd rather grind on men's crotches than grind out words for Rupert Murdoch. Mainstream feminists still haven't clocked that some of us would rather sell our sexual labour than sell our souls to the Prince of Darkness... Enjoy that salary!
I doubt Janice Turner has ever met or spoken to a lapdancer in her life. This is exactly the kind of sneering, disparaging tone that mainstream feminists use to discuss strippers. "Useful idiots". Nice one @VictoriaPeckham enjoy your Murdochian salary.
Yes, well. Grinding on crotches is maybe weird physical labour but what about the money earned? The refusal to look at how poor job-options are for most women is some kind of mental illness.
@RachelPine1 @VictoriaPeckham@thetimes That is literally the reason dancers are unionising, to fight back against their exploitative working conditions. If we shut clubs down we can't do that.
